Counting down the days till we are all together in Japan for the World Sh*toryu International Championships. 🇯🇵 We have 3 competitors going from the dojo as part of the Australian contingency and a few more going to train with Sensei.
It's a new kick type of night tonight. 😳Yoikes - send help!
We take children from the age of 6yrs old at this dojo. Before then we figure there is lots of childhood business still to be done - skipping, hopping, jumping, upside down hanging, monkey bar swinging, rolling, crawling, marching, splits, cartwheeling, throwing, catching, climbing.
Play is serious childhood business. Structured recreational classes are lovely if you can afford it but physical play in the world is a solid foundation for everything to come. It is scary how many children, even at 6yrs old these days can't do these basic developmentally appropriate skills. You don't need to be a PT or a coach to teach marching, skipping, catching. Go have fun with your kids in the garden.
Bring back play. It matters.

Sh*tokai Australia Team!! 🇦🇺
The excitement is real. We have 3 students from our dojo representing Australia at the World Sh*toryu Karatedo Federation in Japan.
We leave in 2wks with a larger group for a Japan Study Tour. We incorporate training with Sensei in Yamanashi, International seminars and competition in Yokohama and cultural Tour in Kyoto. 🇯🇵🥋

Three weeks till we are back in Japan training with Sensei. 🇯🇵🥋 The countdown had begun.
This time we are very excited to be taking a group of teenagers from the dojo for the first time. So grateful to create these lifetime memories through karate.
Our intermediate kids learning the concept of counter attack. Thousands of repetitions to come as we move towards understanding and incorporating Go No Sen (後の先). Always interesting to see which students naturally favour which Kumite style.

We know that Yr1 students are learning how to write a procedure at school. So they got a little bit of ‘extra’ karate homework 😂 Instructions on how to line up at karate. We particularly loved the “we do not have a bendy banana body”, “we stay strait”. Super cute kids.
It’s a hard life when your Sensei is also a school teacher 👩🏼🏫
