Bagua Zhang Weapon Form: Bagua Da Dao /Big Saber 八卦大刀 Part 1
Bagua Da Dao / Bagua Big Saber / Bagua Large Broadsword 八卦大刀 is an important Dao Taolu within the Fu Style Bagua Zhang system. It is regarded as the mother form of both the Bagua Cyclone Dao 八卦旋風刀 and the Bagua Killing Enemy Da Dao 八卦殺敵大刀.
Unlike forms designed primarily for performance, the Bagua Da Dao is a practical training form and does not contain a large number of decorative or flowery movements. Its emphasis is on developing fundamental Dao techniques, strength, control, and the ability to handle a large and heavy weapon.
For this reason, it is also known as the Bagua Da Dan Dao 八卦大單刀, literally meaning the Bagua Large Single Saber.
Bagua Dao shown in photographs of Fu Zhensong 傅振嵩, his weapon was approximately 3 chi longer than a standard Bagua Dao, giving it an estimated overall length of approximately 163.2 cm. Unfortunately, this Dao was reportedly lost during the Japanese invasion of China during the Second World War.

Leung King Yu (梁勁予) (1911–2003), given name Congye (從業), courtesy name Si'an (思庵), was a native of Taishan, Guangdong (廣東台山). He started study Shaolin Kungfu. In 1929, he studied internal martial arts under the renowned Baguazhang (八卦掌) master Fu Zhensong (傅振嵩), learning Baguazhang bare hand and weapon routines.
In 1932, Chen Weiming (陳微明) was invited by Sun Yat sen University (中山大學) President Zou Lu (鄒魯) to teach martial arts in Guangdong (廣東), and Leung King Yu (梁勁予) began studying Yang style Tai Chi Chuan (楊式太極拳) under him. The following year, Leung followed Chen Weiming (陳微明) back to Shanghai (上海) to continue his studies at the Zhirou Martial Arts Society (致柔拳社).
Although Chen Weiming (陳微明) had many students in Guangdong (廣東), he accepted only Leung King Yu (梁勁予) as his indoor disciple (入室弟子).
While Chen Weiming (陳微明) was teaching martial arts at Sun Yat-sen University (中山大學), Leung King Yu (梁勁予) photographed all of his Tai Chi (太極) postures; the martial arts photographs featured in Chen Weiming's (陳微明) publications were taken from this set of pictures. In addition, Leung King Yu (梁勁予) also took the photographs for Chen Weiming's (陳微明) book, Baguazhang Grappling Techniques (《八卦掌擒拏術》).
Leung King Yu (梁勁予) also studied painting, calligraphy, and seal carving under artists such as Hu Peiheng (胡佩衡). In the early 1930s, his painting and calligraphy works were published in the Hushe Monthly (《湖社月刊》). Under the guidance and introduction of his mentors, he spent decades collecting letters and paintings by modern masters, building a rich collection and becoming a renowned art collector.
Leung King Yu (梁勁予) was also highly accomplished in traditional Chinese medicine (中醫). While in Shanghai (上海), he studied acupuncture, internal medicine, and traumatology (bone-setting) under the famous doctor Shi Xiaoshan (石筱山). Later, because his grandmother was advanced in age and frequently ill, he bid farewell to Chen Weiming (陳微明) and returned to his hometown in Guangdong (廣東), where he opened a clinic to practice medicine and serve the public.
In 1938, Leung King Yu (梁勁予) relocated to Macau (澳門) and established the "Huanzhong Tai Chi Society" (環中太極拳社). The name "Huanzhong" (環中 - center of the ring) was drawn from the classic text Zhuangzi (《莊子》): "Attain the center of the ring, and you can respond to the infinite" (得其環中,以應無窮).
In 1948, Leung King Yu (梁勁予) moved to Hong Kong (香港), opened a medical clinic on Wing K*t Street (永吉街), and established the Hong Kong "Huanzhong Tai Chi Society" (香港環中太極拳社) to teach Yang-style Tai Chi Chuan (楊式太極拳). In 1985, Leung King Yu (梁勁予) immigrated to the United States (美國), continuing to spread Yang style Tai Chi Chuan (楊式太極拳) overseas.
