Hyoho Taisha-ryu Kenjutsu Australia

With the Hyoho Taisha Ryū international Keikokai coming up later in 2026, the Australian Study Group prepares for its members to attend. This will be the first visit for some of our newer candidates as well as exams for several senior members.

In order to prepare, the team revises and develops on lessons. The fundamental core of these lessons focuses on understanding how the body moves and how to apply this movement within the Taisha Ryū curriculum.

こちらは、海外および国内の遠方に在住する門人を対象にしたもので、月に９クラス、年間108クラス行います。

各グループや個人による《自主練習》は引き続き重要ですが、本制度は、古流本来の意味での《稽古》を大切にするために設けられたものです。

Our school has used online training for our members for some time. This allows our members to be in regular contact and have training directly from our teachers in Japan.

This method of training with regular and more calibrated training enabled everyone in Japan and abroad to stay aligned and has been a successful way of elevating knowledge across the school.

Beginning in November this online training model underwent a significant upgrade, as such the students reset and have gone back to day 1 and are deeply entrenched in focusing on and embracing the core fundamentals of our curriculum, specifically around Basics, Kata and Iai.

New candidate Ryan has gone through his initial interviews with the overseas leadership team and been given permission to begin initial training the fundamentals of Taisha Ryū.

Ryan is being exposed to the basics in stance, positions (Kamae) and moving the body. Learning that we cut with our body, not with the sword. The sword is connected to the body in its movement. In addition, Ryan is learning suburi and exposure to the understanding of the next level, that being paired suburbi, as well as the five elements kamae within our curriculum.

The group on a whole continues to practice and refine individual study before applying within paired kata.

Taisha Ryū Sydney Group has found a new home to train in. Everyone has been adapting to the change which is an essential core tenant of Taisha Ryū - learning to flow and adjust accordingly to new environments.

New candidate Anthony has progressed and showing great promise and enthusiasm to his new lessons. The more senior members have been revising fundamentals within the kata and revisiting drills with renewed vigour.

Shortly one of our seniors, Go Kurata will be leaving for his training period of intense instruction (Keiko - old teachings passed down form the Masters) in Japan with Soke and Sensei. In this time, the group will be focused on developing new members Michael and Anthony while the more senior members step up to prepare for the next stage of training in 2026.

Next year presents a new chapter as Taisha Ryū will be holding its first tri-yearly international Keiko in Kyushu Japan. This event brings all of the Monjin across the world to train together under one banner, as a unified Ryū.
