Maverick Kart would like to say a massive congratulations to the boys from Kart 7 in Team Seven73 taking out Maverick Karts first podium on QLD soil finishing third in SEK QLD marquee event the Ipswich 12 hour! Changeable conditions throughout made this race extremely challenging for all competitors and despite going down over 6 laps early in the race the team had the pace to get back to the podium in a great result for the team! These guys have been getting better and better every round with their Maverick Kart and it’s great to see them on the podium hopefully the first of many!!!

‘Doing it in the Dirt’
The Port Macquarie Kart Racing Club were hosts to round 2 of this year’s championship at the weekend, where SEK QLD teams took on Sportsman Enduro Karting Nsw teams in the annual State of Origin challenge. Lining up on the grid were 24 karts across both states, contesting 2x 6 Hour races to determine the State of Origin winners and our National Champions.

Deciding to only enter kart 7 for this round meant Mark Keilar was able to assist drivers David Tenaglia and Dan Nystrom for the weekend in the pits, and it would certainly pay off. Race 1 started under rain and didn’t really ease up much all day Saturday, at some points getting very heavy. Some teams braved it on slicks for the entire race, whilst others including kart 7 bolted on the wet tyres.

David started the race and pace was very strong, putting in consistent times to keep up with the front runners. Unfortunately the rain caused one of the engines to stall, costing kart 7 valuable track time and position. Both drivers recovered well though, managing to recover to finish 6th overall.

Race 2 on Sunday was run in almost perfect conditions. The track had mostly dried overnight meaning that karts and drivers could be pushed to their limits. David started from P6 in kart 7 making a great getaway, eventually settling into a battle for 4th position with 3 other karts. An unlucky incident with another kart put him half a lap behind during his first stint, sending him to the back of the pack. Pace in the kart was excellent however, recovering to 13th by the first pit stops.The remainder of the race was fairly uneventful, putting in consistently fast laps from both drivers to recover up to 6th position again when with 40 minutes to go, a clutch drum failed. Speedy pit work from Mark and Dan meant that only 2 positions were lost, with Dan bringing the kart home in P8.

Congratulations to kart 66 Force Phantom for taking out the National Championship against some very tough competition.

After 3 months away from a race track, Season 2019 saw us kick things off at Toowoomba & Lockyer Valley Kart Club at the weekend for round 1 of the 2019 SEK QLD championship. The event consisted of 2x 1 hour ‘Ironman’ races on the Saturday and a 6 hour race on Sunday.

Qualifying pace for both karts was unfortunately a bit off the front runners. Kart 7 could only manage P8 whilst Kart 73 qualified in P10.

The first of the ‘Ironman’ races saw David Tenaglia take the wheel of Kart 7 and Paul Crossley onboard Kart 73. At the drop of the flag David rocketed away from the rolling start and was up to P5 by the 3rd corner. Unable to keep pace with the top 3 teams, he settled into a battle with TFR in front and Rupert’s Bar and Grill behind him, trading places continuously with both karts for most of the race. His race pace dropped off towards the end, finishing in P6. Kart 73 maintained a consistent pace all race long, just finishing inside the top 10.

The second of the ‘Ironman’ races didn’t start so well for Kart 73 with a fuel pump problem preventing Mark Keilar from taking the grid. The failure resulted in time lost in the pits, with Mark finally getting Kart 73 out on track for the last 20 minutes of the race. Kart 7 however had a much more fortunate race. After again starting from P8, Dan Nystrom got away well with the pack but out braked himself and spun the kart at turn 6 on the first lap, putting him to the back of the field. With some relentless driving and pace to contend with the top 3 karts, Dan managed to make his way back through the field and finished Kart 7 in a very respectable P4.

Sunday’s main event was an awfully hot affair with ambient temperatures reaching 37 degrees, testing both driver and machine. Both karts started well with David maintaining Kart 7 in P5 until the first driver change and Brock Thornton making his way from P11 up to P6 in Kart 73 before his first stop. Both karts ran a completely trouble free race and settled into some close battles with TFR and Rupert’s Bar and Grill. In the end and after gaining positions due a weight penalty for TFR, Kart 7 finished the race in P4 and Kart 73 finished in P5.

The sun rises at Toowoomba Kart Club for the SEK QLD Toowoomba 6 hour. Yesterday was a hot punishing day for all the drivers and teams in the Ironman 1 hour Super Sprints. Today is going to be even hotter! Going to be a cracking race!

'Fiery Finale'
The Cooloola Coast Kart Club were the hosts of the 7th and final round of the SEK QLD Championship for 2018. The day greeted the team with 38 degree air temp, and up to 60 degree on track temp. Whilst the conditions would play a major factor in the days endurance race, the first step was to complete the one lap flyer to determine qualifying positions. The debut of the new #7 Maverick Kart chassis kicked off well, qualifying in P8, and the #73 was able to pull out one flyer to position themselves well in P4.
The rolling start to the days 6 hour endure faired well for both teams. #73 was able to work with other teams to lock down P5 for the first stint, and for the majority of the race, with a relatively trouble free run. The #7 ran faultlessly, considering the kart hadn’t seen the track until the weekend. However later in the day the team were struggling to recapture the pace they had shown in practice. Deciding to use the race conditions as a great testing grounds, the team decided to pit and test some items in an effort to rediscover the pace in the kart. Whilst this jeopardised their race, it reaped reward, being one of the faster karts after making some changes in the afternoon.
The #73 kart had a reasonable run throughout the day, switching up the strategy with shorter stints, to account for the physical strain the conditions were providing. Sitting around 5th for the day, unfortunately the 51/2 hour mark was all the kart had in it, after a random issue arose, where the brake disc decided to part company with it’s carrier.
Unfortunately this placed the teams 11th (73) and 12th (7) for the day. After an interesting season, this placed the teams in another team formation of 8th (73) and 9th (7). Whilst the team has a feeling of unfinished business, it provides extra motivation and a great building block for Season 2019, which we are genuinely excited for. Again we wouldn’t be able to have the fun we do if it wasn’t for our Sponsorship Group. Thanks again must go to:

“Marquee Marathon”
The SEKQld Marquee Round presented our longest race of the season. 12 hours, 18 stops, 3 drivers. The Marquee round at Ipswich Kart Club was not only a test of physical shape, but a major mechanical challenge. The karts were both dialled in relatively well in practice, and qualifying saw both do short stints, to secure 6th (73) and 8th (7) on the grid.
Race start produced an exciting first 10 laps, with 73 right in the battle pack, spending some time inside the top 3. As things settled down the 73 settled into 6th, with the 7 close behind. Pit changes ran smoothly for both teams, and the strategies were playing themselves out well. Whilst awaiting the predicted rain, all 3 drivers in number 7 were super consistent and the kart came on stronger as the race went on. However sitting in a clear 5th place, they had a seat mount snap, which ensued the other to work its way loose. A swift stop was undertaken to rectify the situation, but crucial time was lost, setting them back to 8th.
After some early biff and barge that saw the 73 pushed off the fastest part of the track, the team settled in and drove the kart consistently and efficiently. Effort in preparation could clearly be seen with no mechanicals until the second last lap, where a rear bar let go. A quick stop to fix the issue allowed the line to be crossed in a very respectable 5th place. 7 showed their true pace to drive back up to 7th place, hunting down 6th but running out of time.
Finishing close to 10pm, both karts performed admirably, and everybody worked well as a team to finish this marathon. This race really was a war of attrition, and takes a toll on the body for the few days following. Onwards and upwards bring on our next round, where we will try to capitalise on the reliability we have found, and match it with pace!
