🚨 CARD SURCHARGES ARE GONE.

From 1 October 2026, Australian businesses will no longer be able to add surcharges to eftpos, Visa and Mastercard payments.

So if you currently pass your card processing fees onto customers, that cost is about to become your cost.

That leaves you with a few choices:

👉 Absorb the card fees and take the hit to your margin
👉 Review your pricing before 1 October
👉 Encourage customers towards lower-cost payment methods where appropriate
👉 Build payment costs into your overall pricing model

For a business doing a decent amount of turnover through card payments, 1–2% adds up bloody quickly!

Don’t wait until October to realise what it’s costing you.

The five most expensive words in your business.

You're quoting at 9pm. Chasing invoices on Sunday. Answering calls with one glove off.

Your business can't grow past your hours.

The tradies who scale aren't the best on the tools. They're the ones who let go.

80% done by someone else beats 100% never done.

You said yes. You just gave away half your year.

30% gross-profit job. 10% discount.

You now need 50% more jobs to make the same profit.

Not 10% more. 50%!

More sites. More labour. More admin. More risk. Same money in the bank.

That's not a discount. That's six months of free work.

And it gets worse fast — 20% off a 30% GP job means you need to triple your workload. 30% off means no amount of work gets you back. You're on site losing money.

Find your GP% along the top. Find your discount down the side. That number is what you've signed up for.

Then stop discounting and start justifying your price.

Scared to put your prices up? Look at this table.

At 30% GP, a 10% price rise means you'd have to lose 25% of your customers to get back to where you started.

Here's the thing — you won't.

Put your prices up 10% and you might lose one or two price-shoppers. The ones who were killing your margin anyway.

Everyone else pays. And that lands straight in your pocket.

Find your GP% along the top. Find your price rise down the side. That's your safety margin — and it's bigger than you think.

Most trade businesses aren't under-selling. They're under-charging.

$10k of costs. Quote $13k. Profit $3,000.

$3,000 on a $13,000 job is 23% gross profit margin.

That 7% gap on $800k of turnover? $56,000. Never stolen. Just never charged.

Want to KEEP 30%? You have to ADD 43%.

Markup is what you type into the quote. Margin is what hits the bank.

You can be "worth" a million and still not make payroll on Friday...

That's the trap.

Trucks, gear, a house, work booked six months out — on paper, you're winning. But net worth doesn't pay your subbies. Cash does.

I see it every week. Tradies billing $1m +, looking flush, sweating every Friday because the money's locked up in half-finished jobs, stock, and invoices nobody's paid yet.

Net worth is a number on a page.

Cash is what keeps the doors open.

Everyone is chasing the next shiny thing. New service. New product. New market. New software. More moving parts. More headaches.

But the businesses that ACTUALLY make money? Boring.

Same offer. Same systems. Same handful of things done well, over and over.

If you want excitement, go find it on the weekend. Take up surfing. Buy a dirt bike.

Your business has one job: to make money.

You can't read the label from inside the bottle.

When you're on the tools all day — quoting jobs, chasing invoices, putting out fires — you never get to step back and ask the one question that matters: is any of this actually working?

That's the job. Not to tell you how to build. To cut through the day-to-day noise, ask the questions you're too flat out to ask yourself, and hand you a clear view of your own business.

The only prize is a thinner margin.

Buffett nailed it decades ago: price is what the customer pays, value is what they walk away with.

When you can show a client the real value — job done right, on time, no callbacks — price stops being the conversation.

Know your numbers. Sell your value. Stop discounting to win work that doesn't pay.
