🩺 Behind the scenes of the new Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) Unit at GCUH (H Block), Allied Health teams are preparing to deliver care that looks beyond a single diagnosis and supports the whole person.

For Speech Pathology Clinical Assistant Cheryl, that means understanding each patient’s background and working closely with the team to create a calm, respectful space for recovery.

💬 “In the GEM Unit, it’s about being fully aware of the patient’s background and history,” Cheryl said.

“Understanding their eating and swallowing needs helps us treat people holistically. The calm team environment and training help us understand our patients better.”

The GEM Unit completes the H Block inpatient facility at GCUH, bringing three connected services under one roof to ensure older adults and people with complex needs receive care in the right place at the right time.
