Fencing is a sport that is inclusive, social and character-building. It encourages development of confidence, self-discipline, critical thinking and decision making under pressure. While physically and intellectually challenging, fencing with crossXswords enables people to work towards individual goals within a supportive team environment. Our coaches value and encourage fair play, having a go, persistence and community-spirit. Our training environment is engaging, fun and vibrant, where sport is a journey of discovery and participants can unlock their potential – as athletes and individuals. Our vision is to provide a range of accessible, exciting and flexible pathways into the Olympic sport of fencing. Our training centres aspire to give people of all ages and cultural backgrounds a sports environment with a strong sense of community. We aim to create an inspiring space for fitness, self-development and learning. OUR COACHES

Our qualified and nationally registered fencing coaches are passionate about teaching fencing and promoting the positive values of the sport. All our coaches have current Working with Children checks and are affiliated with Fencing Victoria. While our coaches have developed many fencers to national and international titles, their focus is on constructing strong foundations and understanding of fencing, developing skills that transfer into the wider world (e.g. problem solving, decision making, goal setting, time management and conquering self-doubt) and fostering a life-long love of fencing, regardless of whether you are a social or elite fencer. Our female coaches have developed a Women’s Network in the sport and deliver programs that encourage women’s participation, and build their confidence. Our coaching methodologies are professional, cutting edge and informed by the collective experience of our coaches and our partnership with one of the leading clubs in Italy, Club Scherma Pisa Antonio di Ciolo (link). Our coaches and fencers have benefitted from training with Prof. Enrico di Ciolo since 2003, including numerous training tours to Pisa and hosting Enrico and other CSP coaches in Melbourne for various camps and coaching courses. This school of fencing is unparalleled in its development of pedagogical approaches for children through to elite athletes. Through its creativity and enquiring methods, CSP has become a thought leader in fencing, and has produced incredible results for a private (non-government) club in Italy, including Olympic Champions Alessandro Puccini, Salvatore Sanzo and Simone Vanni, and countless other international medallists. Through their generous mentoring and collegiality, we have developed a coaching program for crossXswords that applies the impressive experience and knowledge of Enrico, and his highly regarded father Antonio di Ciolo, to the Australian context.
