Sadly, today our doors closed for the final time at Shirlene School of Classical Ballet.

Placing your whole self into a dream, and turning that dream into a successful business, is not easy. Sustaining that for 60 years is harder. Saying goodbye to that dream is worse.

For almost 62 years, Shirlene School of Classical Ballet serviced three generations of aspiring dancers within the local community in Moreland. After starting the Shirlene School of Classical Ballet in 1960 in a Scout Hall, at only 20 years of age, my mother Shirley Jones OAM moved the school to its current location on the corner of Anderson and Westgate Streets, Pascoe Vale South in 1963. Together, over the course of 44 years, Ms Jones and I have slowly built on her dream, culminating in 2007, when we converted the 9B studio into a 100-seat theatre.

However, Shirlene School of Classical Ballet, like many in the arts and those that own a small businesses, deeply felt the financial impact of COVID-19 in 2020. As a small business, and one within the arts, the Andrew’s Government’s lack of clarity, lack of funding, policy decisions and continued restrictions were directly responsible for decimating us. As a result, we had no choice but to close the school. The isolation and angst felt by many as a result is the most difficult part of saying goodbye.

A dance school is less about profit and more about the relationships you create with your employees, your students, the families, and the many others who have contributed to your success. As such, to all those who have contributed to the Shirlene School of Ballet throughout our many, many years of service, we give you a sincere and heart felt thanks.

For the final time, the Shirlene School of Classical Ballet, Shirley Jones, and myself, wish you all good health, and take our final bow…

Ballet Exams 2020

Miss Jones OAM wishes to congratulate her students for their most recent, and final, ballet exams with SSCB.

After 7 1/2 months of lock down, and with only 5 weeks to prepare, our students received the following fantastic results:

Internal Ballet Exams - 13th December
A total of 26 exam entries
- 23 received a Pass with Distinction
(with 2 students receiving a perfect score of 100%)
- 2 received a Pass with Merit
- 1 received a Pass Plus

External Cecchetti Exams - 15th December
A total of 6 Advanced 1 exam entries
- 4 received an Honors
- 2 received a Highly Commended
