Whether you’re coaching a grassroots team or an entire sporting club, investing in athletic development is one of the best ways to support your athletes both on and off the field.

At YAD Academy, we work alongside clubs to improve speed, strength, movement quality and injury resilience, while also educating athletes, parents and coaches on topics like training, recovery, nutrition and mindset.

Every program is tailored to the needs of your team, your sport and your season.

If you’re planning for the second half of the year and want to give your athletes every opportunity to perform at their best, we’d love to chat.

Want to improve your acceleration? Do hill sprints.

Hill sprints are one of the most effective ways to teach athletes how to project their body forward, apply force into the ground and develop the powerful first steps needed for acceleration.

The incline naturally encourages better sprint mechanics, helping athletes maintain the body angles required to accelerate efficiently while reducing the braking forces often seen during flat-ground sprinting.

The result?

More force. Better technique. Faster acceleration.

Whether you’re chasing down an opponent, breaking through a defensive line, or exploding off the mark — acceleration is often what separates good athletes from great ones.

Athletic development training builds the foundation that every great basketball player relies on: acceleration, deceleration, change of direction, strength and resilience. Without it, skill breaks down under pressure. With it, everything becomes faster, cleaner and more efficient.

The best players aren’t just skilled — they’re explosive, balanced and durable. They can stop on a dime, absorb contact, re-accelerate and stay sharp deep into games when others fade.

If you want to elevate your game, don’t just train to play basketball — train to become the athlete the game requires.

When I started the Youth Athletic Development Academy, I thought we’d mainly work with kids who already loved sport. Over time, we realised there’s just as much need — if not more — for programs that support kids who don’t.

The key has been making movement fun, while helping every child feel capable and successful. We focus on effort, progress and skill development rather than outcomes or external rewards, building intrinsic motivation through small, consistent wins.

Not every child naturally loves sport, often due to confidence or past experiences — but that can change. Our goal is simple: create an environment where all kids can enjoy movement, build confidence and actually look forward to being active.

“Better people create better athletes.”

Inspired by the All Blacks, true sporting success comes from culture — humility, accountability and zero ego. Sport isn’t just about physical development, it’s one of the best tools for building resilience, handling pressure, learning from failure and staying grounded through success.

At YAD Academy, we’re focused on more than performance — we’re building better people who lift each other up and thrive together on and off the field.

The sled push is a simple but powerful lower-body exercise that builds glutes, hamstrings and calves while improving sprint acceleration. It’s low-skill, safe to load heavy and requires minimal recovery compared to traditional lifts. Because it closely mirrors sprint mechanics, it’s a staple in youth athletic development for building strength, speed and resilience year-round.

Most junior athletes spend hours playing sports each week, but very few are actually developing the physical qualities that improve their performance.

Speed, power, strength and coordination don’t just appear through sport alone. They need to be trained intentionally.
