Well haha..Huzzah! Word on the streets is the basso runners went above and beyond the call of duty! For the running festival on Sunday.
Many firsts were accomplished: basso runner Scott Fraser debut for the marathon and after a sleep he is keen for more ✊️.
Basso runner Colin Smith, the man with many talents except for handyman skills was first in his age category by a long shot. Well done bruv!
Coach Matt Dowson once again taking control and steadying the boiz. It was said Col and Alan were getting carried away in the hustle and bustle at the start that they wanted to give it the beans but under the tutelage and years of experience Matt convinced them to hold their horses which turned to be pivotal as halfway through the wheels had nearly come off.
Tell us your story in the comments, we'd love to hear it!

Introducing the basso runner squad who will be attending birdys backyard ultra!
Matt, Mick and new up and comer Findlay.
These guys have been training, putting in the work, showing up and hitting the streets.

These guys have tapped into some secret training methods that only elite ultra runners are known for. Running 42km to parkrun and then running the parkrun shoulder to shoulder.
Ultra runner elites set the bar and these basso runners nodded and got to work.

Roofs were raised once the friendly volunteers at quinns parkrun were told of the basso runner exploits. The talk of the town. Its why we do this. Inspirational, now go tie up your laces and Get amongst it.

Easter weekend 2024:
Jarradale heritage trail parkrun, we brought the basso runner vibe, we interacted with locals, volunteers and felt sure we made a good impression. Drove to Kojonup for lunch, entered the bakery: the question was asked: whats in the vegetable pasty? Vegetables the lady said. Mt Magog for lunch afters, treated some hikers to some bassorunner laughs after being cooped up in the car for hours. Bassorunners answer to kipchoge had a slip and impaled his arm with a twig on the way down, Albany medical centre for a clean and stitch up and a last minute accommodation find for a stay over in Albany. Brekky treats at 3 anchors cafe on Sunday morning followed by a run along the bib to the windfarm. Lunch was had in Albany centre then a Petrol and a Coles pitstop for fuel and hot cross buns.
Drove to the Porongurups to attempt Castle rock but with the packed carpark decided to do Mt Trio instead, done, dusted and made our way to Mt Trio bush camp for the final night of an adventurous weekend. Next morning we strolled up Mt Hassel then made our way back home with a lunch stop at Kataning.
Plans got changed but the basso runners showed tenacity, adapted and made it a weekend to remember.
Huzzah.

Hey. Just a recap of our last adventure: the longest run perth 2023 edition. 7 parkruns were sampled in succession thanks to Coach mentioning it a few weeks back.
He has completed a few previous outings and highly recommended having a go: You want adventures, you want fun? With friends? Yes, yes, yes!
Well click 'going' on the fb event page then dummy!

This year's iteration was hosted by Chris and Karen Gore of Phil Gore fame and the basso runners unabashedly made their presence known. How did we make people know we were in attendance? Other than clicking 'going' on the fb event page we wore the shirts of course! We raised the fist and kept repeating through out the day our friendly mantras and catchy sayings: 'Basso runners!', 'We're the basso runners!' And randomly saying 'huzzah!'.
People were smiling, people were returning fist pumps and people were bewildered!
Ship wreck parkrun was the first port of call and the speech was given and the count down counted down.
We took it easy and played it safe at shipwreck, taking in the sights and mentioned how the place had changed since its inauguration, the scenery had really grown. We took mental notes and Col put some targets on some backs because in true parkrun fashion people went out strong. Unlike them we have a coach whose guidance on many occasions rings true: 'after this there are 6 to go so conserve yourselves and reap the rewards later'. Col couldnt help himself though and ran ahead with one of the fasties who ended up missing a crucial turn and consequently they both led each other up the garden path. Chris Gore was kind enough to yell at them to come back, I mentioned maybe you should of let them enjoy the extra!
We arrived at the finish as a group and after a short break and more chatting we made our way to Champion lakes parkrun.

Huzzah! We arrived safely to Champion Lakes thanks to Bevs safe driving and after the briefing we all set off. I didn't count how many there were but hazarding a guess I would say there were 30+. I started from the back and chatted to 2 of my brother and sisters friends and then caught up to Coach and Col who upon my arrival were enjoying abit of peace and quiet for once, chuckles. I dont blame them because I had taken a caffeine tablet and I just couldn't stop talking for the whole day.
We observed Phil Gore just launch it and disappear down the back straight. The 3 basso runners still played the conservative game and finished safe and sound.
We need coffee! Col, Bev and Matt said as we piled in the car so Bev drove us to the Dome in Gosnells which is a stones throw away from pioneer Park parkrun. Subsequently a memory came up on Facebook that the basso runners had been to pioneer parkrun last year on the exact day! Of course it was story time and I reminded the 3 and bully that last year during our warmup on the course I had exclaimed who we were to parkrun patrons who retorted, 'more like basso joggers to us' and subsequently it was all on coach to defend the basso runners honour and finish ahead of these disrespectors.
He did and the rest they say is history.
Also before we go further I must mention as we made our way from champion Lakes a real banger of a tune came on the radio and pumped up the vibe in the car...or so I thought: no, my companions started crying, "turn it off its trash!" "my ears hurt" "you call this music do you?". I sat in disbelief and after the radio station was changed I hummed the tune to myself.
After the coffee stop Bev parked us up, we exited the vehicle and shirts were getting changed to which I declined and told Col that I would be employing the wear the shirt back to front tactic to baffle and confuse. I kid you not as we descended to pioneer parkruns start Phil Gore stood transfixed as I purposly marched down with fist raised, I could only imagine what he was thinking, is that guy wearing his shirt the wrong way round? Yes. Basso runners lad. In attendance.

A short spiel by Chris Gore and we were off and this time the famous Micheal Head had joined us and we traversed the course as the 3 musketeers and D'Artagnan. Mick began learning the ways of the basso runner: This is what we do, this is what we say Etc.
Micheal Head is a friend of the basso runners and is an ultra runner legend with a humongous life changing story that you should ask him about next time you see him. But closer to home he had completed the recent 24 parkruns in 24 hours and it was a surprise to see him and Em rock up at Ship wreck parkrun and hear that they were attending todays festivities.
When they turn up you know the day is only going to get better.

Well pioneer was completed and we made our way to Homestead parkrun which is located in Thornlie and that's when things heated up. A rival running group had turned up you see, in a show of force, completely unexpected and they were throwing down moves from the get go. One of wooshas warriors had punched it from the start line and was off the front to take the coveted first place as Phil had called it a day and headed off to work after pioneer parkrun. First place was up for grabs now and we found out that homestead parkrun was wooshas warriors home and they weren't about to give first place to the out of town basso runners without a fight.
Fists could be thrown and im glad to say we've got contingencies for that sort of nonsense. We could let our expert fist catcher Col catch those wayward hay makers or let Bully loose on them. If that fails Col could calm them down by selling them a few cheap clothes or even give them a bag of groceries.
Wooshas warriors founder told us the inner workings of wooshas warriors, their origin story and the like and we became friends. We over took speedy Gonzales because he had cooked his own goose. 'Kev, hes you in wooshas warriors!' Haha, very funny coach. At that moment we turned up the heat, we sensed a moment of weakness and capitalised. Or more like Col turned to me with a twinkle in his eye and a smile he then put in a move: Alright Chris, feel the power of the basso runners. Me watching Col in action I was like: 'Hell yeah, i dont need an excuse!' And just upped it and blew past friends and foes, a basso runner one two, bap bap. Coach just sat back amused watching the kids play. "You'll pay for that later boys" wise words from the coach that I've heard plenty before.
Upon completion we made our way for lunch which was at the friendly Bentley tavern. We had completed 4 of the seven and both Col and Coach said they were going to eat light and I had agreed but next thing I knew I had ordered a veggie burger and chips, Bev had a wine or two. We ate and drank and not soon after being recognised by a friends ex work colleague because I was wearing Cols loud pink shirt it was time to make our way to Canning river. Oof, the weather folks, the cold was starting to make itself known.

It's quite funny seeing the public looking and wondering what the gathering and commotion was all about on a non parkrun day which was easily explained by yours truly as I've had many years of practice saying: 'We're the basso runners' I stop there because that's the who...the why, I haven't really figured that out yet to succinctly say.
Anyway Canning river got done and we sat down at the undercover seating and thats when the rain came in. Good timing. While we rested wooshas warriors founder and presidentè questioned us on our shirts and gave some pointers and Col chimed in with a joke which really got a patrons back up, sensing danger I immediately calmed the situation down by reassuring the man that "it's all jokes and that we are all friends here". 'Hey Mister!, Shelley is next' so we got into Bevs car whom had the engine running and the heater going while she waited for us. Each time we got into the car we would update Bev and Bully on the happenings. Riveted she drove us to Shelley.

The wind had picked up by the time we arrived at Shelley and we were exposed because Shelley is by the Swan river. I really didn't want to leave the warm car, but I did and the four of us began and moved as one which resulted in us blowing the field apart.
I want to bring to your remembrance those speedsters who at ship wreck and champion Lakes were upfront putting on a show were now in complete damage control and the basso runners ran to the front smiling. Sort of. Coach and Col took the lead for the first kilometer, 500m with the wind and then turn at turn around 1 and do 500m into the wind. I was quite happy letting those two cut into the wind but Mick said, let's give them a break and have a turn, Ok. We took the lead and led for 2kms, I emptied the tank for the lads and they took over at the 2nd turn around and proceeded to wind it up. Basso runners really putting the hurt down.
As soon as we crossed the finish line I ran for the car. Bev and bully were faithfully there, car running, heater on! We waited for Coach and Col and then made our way to Bibra lake. Just one more ✊️

The end is in sight! We've just got to run 5km to get there! Bev parked us at the carpark where the finish line was located and we made our way on foot to the startline which was nearly 1km south.
As we all congregated I mentioned we should all run together as a big group and finish together and everyone agreed, what a good idea! Mick went over and whispered in Coach and Cols ear and off they went, "the quicker you go the sooner you finish" he must of said as they just took off. I decided I was happy doing a gentle trot and accompanied Chris Gore.
I was with Chris but felt at a loss that I wasnt with my basso runner brothers and had that nagging feeling that I still must let people know who I belong to and what we do, there were mothers, fathers pushing prams, family's taking the kids for a walk. I leapt into action and repeated fimiliar phrases: "Hey, you dont know this but I am here to inform you that we're The Basso runners", "its us! The basso runners!", "basso runners and friends! I mean friend" and the old favourite: "huzzah!".
Chris didn't know what to say, all he did was laugh which i took as a positive. He could of said, 'I'm not a basso runner" to the passerbys but he didn't. That cemented it to being a positive.
Further up the road (I was told later) it dawned on Mick that since I was running with Chris people didnt know who He, Coach and Col were or who they belonged to and what they were about without me there to announce. Well that meant they werent wasting valuable energy skylarking and they started picking up the pace, they felt the finish line drawing closer and Col dipped into his reserves from all the marathon training, good dieting and entered the realms of 410- 430 pace in the last kilometer. He put the hurt on his 2 companions and gave Mick a run for his ultra running money and pipped him at the finish line and claimed the coveted first finish. Mick came second, coach third and I let our gracious host take 4th and I took 5th. I was the only one to exclaim an enthused Huzzah! We remained til the last finisher crossed the line, huzzahs, clapping and congratulating every completerer.

What an awesome event! succint and free.
Friendly people whom we've seen at other parkruns but now we know by name. Truly grateful to attend this year's edition which was put on by Chris and Karen Gore who ran an excellent event. They also did abit of photo taking and video recording which has been uploaded to youtube thus immortalising the basso runners ✊️.
Col, Bev and Bully covered logistics, transporting coach and I around the place.
(How have you managed to keep your license all this time? Col mentioned to Bev). Coach lending his steady hand, being the voice of reason that the years of experience can only bring.

What a way to spend a winters day.
You have to do 2024s edition!
