Stop kicking your teeps! 🛑🦵

It’s one of the most common mistakes beginners make on the mats—treating a push kick (teep) like a regular snap kick. If you’re just flicking your leg up, you’re missing out on massive control and power.

The teep is your ultimate defensive shield and distance creator. Here is the exact 3-step breakdown to get it right:

1️⃣ Get in your stance: Everything starts with a rock-solid foundation.
2️⃣ Chamber high: Lift your knee straight up to your chest. The higher the knee, the more leverage you have to push.
3️⃣ Extend & swing: Push directly through your target while swinging your same-side hand down for maximum power and balance.

When you put it all together, you create an unstoppable tool for frustrating aggressive opponents and keeping them exactly where you want them.

It’s one of the most common habits we see on the mats—swinging your lead arm all the way down to your waist to try and force more power into your kick.

But here is the reality check your coach wants you to hear: Your arm makes up roughly 6% of your total body weight. 🧠📊

When you throw that weight violently away from your center line, here is what actually happens:

📉 Your balance goes out the window: Your torso is forced to lean to the side to compensate.

🥊 Your defense evaporates: You leave your chin completely exposed to a straight counter-punch down the middle.

The Fix: "Answer the phone." Glue that lead hand to the side of your head when you kick. It keeps your weight centered, keeps you balanced, and ensures you don't get caught with your guard down.

Power comes from your hips and pivot—not from swinging your arm like a helicopter!

What do you do when a knee is flying at you and you read it late? 😱🥊

We’ve all been there. You miss the early read on a step-up knee, and suddenly your opponent is right on top of you.

The Pivot Step is your best friend here, but your counter-attack has to match your timing. ⏱️
✅ Saw it early? Pivot and land a free kick.
✅ Saw it late? Pivot and land a short left hook.
🚨 Saw it WAY too late? Throw the "Hail Mary"—hook their arm, pull them past you, and steal their balance.

Mastering these three timings will completely change your defensive game. Time to put in work on that pivot step!

There’s nothing worse than seeing a step-up knee coming and not knowing how to shut it down. If you’re just standing there, you’re a sitting duck.

The good news there is more then one way to defend against a step up knee!

In this video, we break down the 3 keys to a perfect defense:
