Part 3
Our first APWFC was an outstanding success.
Saturday the 1st of September
The organized reception by Rachel Gomez and N9WFC was brilliant, everything had been pre-planned.
After a quick introduction to the facilities at the courts, everyone mustered into their teams for the opening ceremony.
National anthems were played and sung to, for most of us, it was the real beginning of our first international games.
Cha Kee Chin was the local politician that presided over the ceremony, he was introduced to every player, from every team, that took part in the APWFC, and kicked off the opening games.
I've attached a video clip.
The day itself was exhausting, slightly humid with a gentle breeze
We all played 6 x 20 minute games, some volunteered to assist Rachel by refereeing several matches, headed by Tony Bellis who had been carrying an injury, reducing his ability to play.
The pace was hectic, all matches were competitive, and played in the true spirit of walking football.
Iced water had been supplied for all of the players, all day long, as was a light lunch, which was greatly appreciated by all.
It was more fun that I had anticipated, weary players still managed a smile, new friendships were made and continue to grow.
The return trip to our hotel was noisy on the coach, as we all recounted the memories of our first days play.
A restaurant was picked for a team meal, where we were joined by some of the Malaysian mens players, Karaoke was attempted by some of the Aussies, (yes, we have you all on video)
Many made it back to the hotel before midnight, a few in the wee hours of the morning.
Sunday 2nd of September.
With a lack of sleep, we all made it to breakfast, just.
Our coach returned us to the Padel courts again.
Sunday was designed as a fun day,
We not only played mixed womens & mens teams, but players from the different countries formed "International" teams, it was great to see, as Malays played alongside Aussies and Singaporeans.
Seremban Veterans asked to join the days play, which was agreed to by Rachel, to introduce more players to the game we all enjoy so much.
Medals were awarded,
Trophies presented,
Proudly, I can say, the winners of the First Asia Pacific Walking Football Cup, was the Association of Walking Football Australia.
An Australian flag, signed by every player in the tournament, was presented to Rachel, as our way of saying, thankyou, for hosting our first joint International.
Memorandums of Understanding and affiliation were signed by the three countries, with the understanding that the AWFA will host the 2nd Asia Pacific Walking Football Cup in Perth, in 2024.
In the evening, Seremban Veterans invited all players to their club, to join them in festivities, Malaysian food and an evening of fun & laughter.
Which now leads me into an official announcement:
The Association of Walking Football Australia, in cooperation with Football West, is happy to advise that the 2nd Asia Pacific Walking Football Cup, will be hosted in Perth, Western Australia, at the newly opened Sam Kerr Football Centre, Welshpool, on the 24th, 25th and 26th of August, 2024.
Invitations will be forwarded shortly.
I believe that all of us, our players and officials, from Australia, Malaysia & Singapore, have played in a part of history in the making.
I would like to see the APWFC becoming not only an annual event, but a tournament that the countries of our region have pride in participating in.
Lets make each year bigger than the last
