Powerpalooza Set to Shake Up Canning Vale Toyota Late Model Series
A fresh face is guaranteed on the podium this Saturday night as the Canning Vale Toyota Late Model Series returns to the Perth Motorplex for Round Two, with the now traditional season opening Powerpalooza event attracting a strong field of 22 competitors.
With opening round winner Jamie Oldfield and runner-up Veronica McCann both absent from this weekend's field, the battle at the front has been thrown wide open. Third-place finisher Beau Oldfield now finds himself in prime position to capitalise, but with the depth of talent assembled, victory will be anything but straightforward.
Defending series champion Joe Chalmers will be determined to put a disappointing opening round behind him after failing to feature at the front of the field, while seven-time series champion Warren Oldfield will also be looking to re-establish himself among the frontrunners after an uncharacteristically quiet start to the season, coming in to this event as last seasons winner.
Few drivers will enter the weekend with more motivation than Jay Cardy. The long time competitor was the class of the field during Round One, leading the feature race comfortably before cruel engine problems ended what looked certain to be a race-winning performance. Rookie Nathan Chalmers endured similar heartbreak, impressing throughout the night before mechanical issues also left him stranded on the infield, and both drivers will be eager to turn that speed into results this weekend.
Others looking for a much-needed turnaround include Luke Halliday, Brad Blake and Abbey Pickering, all of whom showed glimpses of pace in the opener but were unable to put together the results they were chasing.
The Round Two field also welcomes several exciting additions.
Brent Vosbergen returns to Late Model competition and has already proven he has the speed to challenge for major honours, while Ian Wright will make his highly anticipated Late Model debut.
After time away from competition, series regulars Darren Ahearn, Jorj Park, Ryan Huxtable and Ken Macpherson all return to the grid, adding even more depth to an already competitive field.
Adding another intriguing storyline is Victorian visitor Dylan Barrow. The reigning Australian Modified Sedan Champion will make his first appearance aboard David Nylander's familiar #54 machine, bringing with him plenty of talent and experience after spending some time in the USA over winter.
With no shortage of proven winners, returning stars, exciting newcomers and drivers eager to make amends for missed opportunities in Round One, Powerpalooza shapes as one of the most unpredictable Late Model events seen at the Perth Motorplex in recent years.
Fans can expect a huge night of action as the Late Models join an action-packed Powerpalooza program, with the fight for valuable championship points already beginning to heat up after just one round.
