🚁🎣 This trip was the perfect reminder why learning to drone fish properly can mean the difference between a saved trip
 or going home disappointed.

A mate and I headed away last week for a few days chasing macks. The original plan was to predominantly gas balloon.

After sinking my last drone 😅, I decided to buy a new one just in case conditions weren’t line up for ballooning. (I went with the Aeroo and so far I’m impressed)

Best decision I made.

Morning 1:
I landed a good Spanish mackerel on gas in perfect conditions 🎯

Morning 2:
The wind was too light. On paper it looked fishable, but anyone experienced with ballooning knows that if your bait isn’t skipping properly, your chances drop massively.

Instead of stubbornly persisting, I adapted.

Out came the drone.

I dropped out a few baits and Pete landed a nice mack within 5 minutes of his bait hitting the water 🐟

Final morning:
Forecast looked great, Pete had to bail the day before, standing on the beach I could tell straight away — not enough wind to get a bait working properly.

Did I still send a gas balloons out? Yes.
Based on years chasing pelagics
I knew it probably wouldn’t get hit.

Out came the drone again.

đŸ’„ First drop got hit quickly. Fish on.

The guys fishing up from me also switched to drone fishing and landed one too
while neither of our gas balloon baits got touched.

Reality check:
Without the drone, we likely would have landed 1 fish for the whole trip.

Because we had the drone — and knew when to switch tactics — we landed 3 fish instead of 1.

And here’s the other thing people don’t talk about

Helium isn’t cheap.

A D-size bottle hire is $200, and you’ll generally only get 6–8 balloons out of it. If the conditions aren’t right, you can burn through expensive gas for very little return.

Drone fishing gives you another option when the wind just isn’t playing the game. And the strike rate is just as high!

That’s the biggest lesson here:

It’s not about drone vs ballooning. It’s about understanding conditions and making the right call.

Owning a drone alone won’t magically make you catch fish. The real difference comes from understanding:
✅ When to drone vs balloon
✅ How wind and swell affect bait presentation
✅ What rigs to use, and how to make them
✅ Where to place baits for pelagics
✅ How to work your baits
✅ The small mistakes that cost people fish

Fishing trips are expensive these days — fuel, accommodation, bait, time off work
and often you only get a short weather window.

The right knowledge can literally turn a failed trip into one you’ll remember for years.

That’s exactly why I built my Drone Fishing Course — to shortcut the learning curve and help everyday fishos catch more fish and make more of their trips.

Being at the forefront of drone fishing in WA and guiding clients on hundreds of drone fishing tours, I’ve compacted my knowledge into an easy to follow online course.

Have you ever had a trip saved by changing tactics when conditions weren’t what the forecast said?

When a bloke listens to your chat on The Rodcast, buys your course, absorbs it and applies what he learnt > lifelong dream accomplished đŸ’Ș

I had a chat with customer Adam today, who had a few questions about aspects of what he learnt in The Complete Guide To Beach Fishing course. He said that the knowledge he gained helped him secure this $1.25 mulloway 🙌 Adam’s kindly written up this testimonial to go with it:

“I have been chasing mulloway for over 10 years with no joy, not a soapie nothing. Plenty of good memorable catches but never managing to tick off my goal.

I was listening to the fishing podcast Tall Tails and Robbie was guest speaking on this particular episode. He mentioned that he had created a beach fishing tutorial UpYourCatch once finishing up with his business Perth Fishing Safaris. I had a look at the website and seen that the course was only $89, which in my opinion is a bargain if it helps me catch fish as I have been spending way more than that each trip to not catch my target species.

I signed up for the course and watched every video religiously even if I thought I had that aspect covered just to see his take on it. It was a major eye opener into what I had been doing and how I could make it better.

The day came that I had a bit of time up my sleeve and was able to hit the sand to have a crack and put into practice what I had learned. It revolutionised everything that I was doing. Reading the beach to find the best possible spot, my rig selection, my bait presentation, my drag setting while in the rod holder and how to properly strike the fish when the time came.

1 hour before high tide I put out a nice strip of mullet rigged with maximum hook exposure as I had been taught. It didnt take along until wham, screaming drag. I picked up the rod from the holder and struck the fish, after a 15 minute fight I had this beautiful 125cm mully on the sand with an 8/0 pinned underneath its mouth.

Everything had come together beautifully and I am still pinching myself that I was finally able to land my trophy fish.

I highly recommended the beach fishing course to all anglers of all levels. We all can be pig headed when it comes to fishing but in my opinion theres nothing wrong with a fresh look to see what improvements can be made.

Thanks very much Robbie for spending the time to create this course. From my own experience, the proof is in the pudding here.”

Customer results đŸ’ȘđŸ‘đŸ’„

Complete Guide To Drone Fishing* student Glenn has sent me this pic of a 23.5kg Spaniard he landed on a recent trip to Quobba Station.

*Course available at www.upyourcatch.com

Using his newly-attained knowledge gained from the course Glenn was able to fish with tact and confidence, converting his newly acquired skills into this thick mackie from the rocks.

Prior to his trip Glenn had a few things he wanted to clarify and a number of questions specific to bait size, safe swell conditions, rigs, etc and was in direct communication with myself via messenger. This is something I encourage all customers to do. While the business still young it’s a service I’m able and happy to offer, helping to plan your trips and answer any questions to help you get the most out of your time away.

It’s also worth noting that at the time Glenn landed this fish many anglers had been struggling to entice a strike in the dirty water using gas ballooning and spin techniques. In my personal experience and experience guiding clients on tours to Quobba for over 5 years it’s in these dirty water conditions that a suspended bait is far more effective than a skip bait or fast-spun lure. Using his new-gained drone fishing knowledge Glenn was able to capitalise on the conditions at hand and come up trumps with a better than average fish.

Awesome stuff mate, that’s an epic landbased capture to be proud of đŸ’Ș

As the weather starts to cool many fishos from the lower part of the country head north on their annual LBG fishing trips away to target mackerel, tuna, cobia, trevally, etc from the rocks.

If you’re one of these people and looking to boost your chances of success on your next trip you may want to think about adding a drone to your arsenal.

Personally my favourite method of targeting pelagics off the stones is spinning, and next probably (gas) ballooning. However, the conditions don’t always allow and I find myself drone fishing for pelagics more than other methods these days.

If faced with a moderate swell and high tides spinning the lower ledges is basically a write off. If faced with cross shore, onshore or no/low wind you’ve got no chance of ballooning. That’s quite a few variables that will limit your chances of success if you were to stick with more traditional methods. However, if you had a drone you could get a bait out no dramas at all, getting you back into the game - which is why you went away in the first place, right! To actually get a like in.

If you’re heading north this winter and new to drone fishing or never droned before, I’d highly recommend checking out my ‘Complete Guide To Drone Fishing’ course. There’s a whole section dedicated to LBG fishing, teaching you everything you need to know to do it successfully, from where to fish, rigs, baiting up, important things to consider, where to drop your bait, how to fight the fish, how to gaff your fish, rock fishing safety and so much more.

Course is available at my website www.upyourcatch.com

If you’d like to know what the course covers just click the drop down button and have a browse through the chapters.

It’s a super easy step-by-step guide in an easy-to-follow format, you can check back in at any time to view other chapters, and there’s no questions to answer or anything like that.

As a bit of inspiration here’s a few fish that myself, mates and clients have landed while drone fishing in the north west of WA.

Educate yourself and send it long this season!

Dad and I hit the river this morning shooting for the ‘soon to be released’ Learn How To Fish course. This session was about demonstrating simple but effective techniques for beginners to dip their toes in by targeting bream and whiting on the flats.
It sure brought back some great memories, and hopefully will be the starting point where others will begin making their own.
