5 ways we are incorporating strength training into our classes at Movementality, without diluting the principles of the Pilates Method.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll know that strength training is having its moment (and rightly so)
With strong evidence linking it to reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, better bone health and overall longevity.
However, somewhere along the way, it got pitted against Pilates as if they were enemies.
When in fact they work side by side (and sometimes even together ssshh) rather harmoniously.
So here are 5 ways we are evolving to incorporate strength-based principles into our studio without losing the integrity of what Pilates has to offer;
1. Strength protocols and additional equipment: Alongside our full Pilates apparatus, we have installed a cable machine, gymnastics bar and trap bar. These additions allow us to progressively overload clients beyond the strength of what the springs offer, whilst still remaining true to Pilates principles, working with multiple planes and building on some of the repertoire to move into more gymnastics or callisthenics work (which happens to be part of the inspiration and origin of Pilates’ Contrology anyway.)
2. We are able to use these new pieces of equipment to measure a client’s progress more accurately. This is giving us trackable outcomes which help both us and and the client feel like we are on track towards our goals.
3. We change up our springs - not heavy for the sake of it, but meeting the body in the room with the appropriate load. We also use the springs to progressively overload which means we make things heavier and harder as people get stronger, again without compromising Pilates principles.
4. We are programming in blocks, not just flowing sessions. You’re always working toward something.
5. We are upskilling and deepening our knowledge. A good teacher will keep looking for ways to make what they do, better.
Strength vs Pilates? The goal is not to water down what we’ve always offered. Instead is about giving you a space where you don’t have to choose.
