By now you may already know of the Grand Finals we played in last Saturday. It was quite an achievement for 2 of our 3 teams make the Grand Final after relatively easy wins in the semi final v Southern Rossmoyne for D Grade and Bayswater Postels in H Grade.
-
This meant 2 home Grand Finals to be played for what I believe is the first time in the club's 39 season history.
====================
D Grade played on City Beach Lower v Scarborough - we lost the toss so Scarborough had the advantage of batting first on a ground that ran quite a bit slower than before Xmas (as per usual). Scarborough hit the scoreboard early before Jordan came on to take a wicket and slow the progress. Shane (2-24 off 😎 grabbed a couple of wickets to further slow the run rate, Josh Ko knocked off their top score before Tristan took a couple (2-33) and we finished with another to Jordan (2 for 28 off 😎 who also got a run out off his own bowling to have Scarborough finish with a handy 8-196.
-
Gareth (33) and Daniel (18) started off solidly followed by Jamie getting 21 but unfortunately due to us chasing a above par score needed to take some risks that eventually saw us getting bowled out for 117 with Tristan Showers 22 being the only other score of note.

====================
H Grade won the toss and decided to bat first on a similarly slow outfield of City Beach Upper against Midland. Lachy Teakle and Jack Wheeler (30) opened the batting and put together a tasty 76 run opening partnership to set a foundation before Lachy was out for 43. Jake Codling (39) and Trevor Hart (41) put on handy run a ball scores before we tried to hit quick runs before the 40 overs ran out. We were dismissed for 189 in the last over - putting on a very tough score for Midland to chase.
-
Things weren't necessarily going to go fully to plan - it was a Grand Final after all. Mitch Rees (1-15 off 5) bowled well early and got the opening wicket with the score on 35 - but a few other overs went for a few to have the score on 1-68 and a few nerves going around. Levi Kau took the 2nd wicket before Jack Wheeler (3-6 off 4) and Harry Kau (3-20 off 6) destroyed the Midland middle order to effectively put the game to bed. Wade Croome and Scott Schulz finished off the game with a wicket each to give the club our 15th flag in 39 seasons.
-
Congratulations to the H Grade XII (order per the team photo)
Back: T.Hart (self-appointed spiritual leader), M. Rees, J. Taylor (vc), J. Codling, H. Kau, W. Gandy, S. Schulz, L. Teakle

D Grade and H Grade had home semi finals yesterday - knockout finals v the 4th placed team. As we know the clear Minor Premierships matter little in these sorts of games where if you are a bit below par on the day you are quickly looking at a winter break to contemplate what went wrong.
====================================
D Grade were on the lower City Beach oval v Southern Rossmoyne who we tied against about a month or go in an away game that finished in the dark at 7:20pm - we won the toss and decided to bat first. Unfortunately we lost Daniel Brandis and Jamie Wood early-ish to have us at 2-17. Josh Monaghan (15) and Gareth King steadied the ship including a big 6 to Josh before he was out leaving the score at 3-40.
-
Captain Tristan Showers and Gareth then put on 64 in sensible batting combined with good running between the wickets - ironically ending with Gareth being run out with a direct hit for 40. Tristan (58) continued with his innings with James Boekeman (31 off 28). Happy hours saw some good runs from Niel Smith, Josh Ko and Jordan Brock with a big last ball 6 to Xavier Car seeing us finish at 8-190 off our 40 overs on a slow-ish outfield.
-
Southern Rossmoyne started their innings poorly with James Boekeman (2-19 off 5) taking 2 early wickets to see them at 2/7. A mini partnership was ended with 2 wickets to Josh Ko (2-24) and another to Jordan Brock (1-13 off 7) leaving the score at 5-44. A direct hit run out to Xavier Carr ended a repair partnership.
-
Shane Attard (2-23), Tristan Showers (1-21) and Clive Tilbrook (1-15 off 😎 finished off the game to see Sothern Rossmoyne all out for 116 and a 74 run win and Grand final berth was ours - against Scarborough almost certainly on City Beach Lower.

====================================
H Grade had to move from their usual spot on the Lower Oval to there slightly unfamiliar Upper Oval for their semi-final with the Lower Oval being used by D Grade but it proved no great hinderance against Bayswater Postels as Jake Codling and Thomas Walsh grabbed an early wicket each after we won the toss and decided to bowl first with Mitch Rees (0-12 off 😎 being also hard to score off.
-
2 for 18 soon became 5-60 with Jake (2-22) picking up a 2nd wicket followed by two to Daniel Gandy (2-16). Tom (3-10), Trevor Hart (1-20) and Scott Schulz (1-2) continued the pressure ending with Bayswater 9-92 off their 40 overs.
-
The chase started a little shakily with us losing Lachy Teakle and Warren Gandy early to have the score at 2-22. But Jake Codling (21) and Jack Wheeler 47no steadied the ship with the former being dismissed shortly before the required target was knocked off - sending our boys into the Grand Final next week against Midland (likely also on City Beach Upper)

A quick summary of the 3 wins on Valentine's Day games - which is meritorious with people everywhere being distracted by the State of Origin game on the same day
-
D Grade had a top of the table match at home v Mt Lawley Inglewood knowing a win would sew up the Minor Premiership
-
We had trouble losing wickets early before Josh Monaghan (55) and James Boekeman (30) coming through with a 65 run partnership and Josh Ko putting on 22 in the last few overs on a ground that has slowed down as per usual this time of the year leaving us 8-152 and a slightly below par total.
-
After Mt Lawley got off to a decent start at 3-72 - but we pulled back their progress keeping them to 9-128 after their 40 overs ran out - with Shane Attard 3-19 and Josh Ko 2-19.

==================
H Grade also had a top of the table match with a Minor Premiership the reward if they could knock off Midland away and the team also won the toss and decided to bat 1st.
-
We got off to a decent start with an opening partnership of 42 before losing both openers - but a 66 run partnership between Jack Wheeler (91 off 102) and Alex Daly (24) pushed us towards 6/193 off our 40 overs.
-
Mitch Rees and Thomas Walsh got us 3 early wickets before a run of 6s and 4s had us in a perilous situation at the drinks break 5-140 before Lachy Teakle (4-26) and Jack Wheeler (2-12) ran riot taking 6-17 to dismiss Midland for 161

==================
I Grade were in a must win game to keep finals chances alive playing on the top oval at home against Bayswater Postels
-
We had to field first after losing the toss and got 2 early wickets (to Warren Gandy and David Woolfe) before Sohael Qayyum broke a 3rd wicket partnership to leave BP at 3-68. A big partnership of 80 was broken by Daniel Gandy who dismissed their top scorer on 71 which slowed their progress - finishing on 7-176 after their 40 overs. The Gandy father-son combo got 3-30 and 2-28 with dad having crowing rights over the better figures.
-
Both openers managed to put on a 50 each but fell in quick succession (Warren for 50 and Anthony Fisher for 55) to have us at 2-114 after 29 overs - needing 62 off 67. It ran down to the wire with Xavier Carr hitting the winning runs in the last over to finish on 51no.

Catch up game summary for the game before Xmas on Dec 13 leading into the season's main break - with all three teams scheduled to play Coolbinia West Perth.
Post game presentation of 100 game mugs to Tristan Showers (from earlier in the season) and Jordan Brock - congratulations guys!
===============
D Grade played Coolbinia WP at Yokine Reserve with I Grade playing on the neighbouring ground - we lost the toss (very usual!) and bowled with a very good start having them at 4/31 and then 5/51 with Tristan Showers getting 3 and Clive Tilbrook 2 wickets. A partnership was broken by Jordan Brock (in his 100th game for the club) via a very nice stumping by Niel Smith. Shane cleaned up the tail to finish with 4-9 (including another stumping by Niel) and leaving us 119 to chase.
-
After a slightly shaky start we past the total with 7 overs left with James Boekeman top scoring on 39no. Leaving us on top of the ladder on 8-1 and a superior quotient.

===============
H Grade played Coolbinia WP at home on City Beach Lower - CBGRCC also lost the toss and were sent out to bowl.
-
It became clear early that the rule of the day was to be harsh on wide calls - an early wicket to Mitch Rees followed by a bit of a partnership then a minor collapse and another partnership and the race to the 40 overs. Wickets spread around with 2 each to Mitch Rees and captain Wade Croome - and a nice run out to Jake Codling.
-
So into the batting innings to chase CWP's 9-151 which was a mid range target. We lost Ashaan (who was filing in) early and lost Luke Taseff (20) and Dylan Morgan (17) to have us at 3-49 and a little worried. Jack Wheeler (20) and Jake Codling steadied the ship until the latter was dismissed for 22 which triggered a collapse losing 4-7 to have us at 7-102 still needing 50 for the win.
-
That left Thomas Walsh who had been working really hard on his batting in the nets with Mitch Rees and they dug in and got us within sight of the 152 needed before Tom was run out for 11 with 14 needed.
-
Out came captain courageous who unfortunately soon left with a 2 ball duck to bring out Neil Shao who was playing as a fill in who had never really played cricket or held a bat and needed to be shown how to hold a bat or stand ready. Somehow he saw out the over (which included a no-ball and a wide) to leave Mitch Rees on strike needing 11 still.
-
The following over saw Mitch hit three 2s and then a last ball single to keep the strike - with Neil unsure how to run between the wickets successfully.
-
4 to win with 2 overs and 1 wicket left - four balls later the game was over with the winning run being a wide and a very unlikely win in front of many of the D Grade boys who had managed to get back to watch the drama.
-

I Grade were also against CWP away - we (shock horror) lost the toss and were sent into the field.
-
The team did well to restrict Coolbinia with the main obstactle being their opener who scored 57 - best bowling were 3-17 by James Dellow, 3-25 for Darren Thompson's leggies and 2-31 to Sohael Qayuum. This left us to chase 152.
-
In what ended up being a close game we had 5 of the top 6 batsmen get to double figures with Anthony Fisher 33 and Jake Leahy 25 but unfortunately we were bowled out in the last over 2 runs short of the tie.

D Grade v Dianella at home
-
After Tristan sent us out to bowl, it seemed like it was going to be a good day from ball one, with Tim Ko (filling in) and James bowling in a partnership that would’ve had Starc and Boland applaud. However, it was a slow day out in the middle, as after James got one opener out, the second wicket knuckled down for over 30 overs with about as much intent to score runs as the West Indies against New Zealand. Finally, Shane got the breakthrough, and whilst Dianella’s number 3 hung around for a little bit more, the remainder of the wickets fell quickly, as Tristan took one and Jordan took three in the last over alone, and will be on an unofficial hattrick first ball this week! Good fielding from the more youthful Goats, especially by Tim and Billy ensured Dianella finished on 157.
-
Inesh and Niel both agreed before going out that they weren’t going to die wondering, and while things got chippy when Niel nicked off, Inesh steadied the ship, before trying to hit his third six in an over and watching his head climb to Mars as the ball crashed into his middle stump.
Unfortunately for our readers, the remainder of the innings is difficult to recount, as both Inesh and Tristan weren’t there in person to see quite how things panned out. However, they were assisted by anonymous eyewitnesses, who had this to say about the following questions:
About Dan’s batting: “A classy first fifty for the club”
About the collapse: “In the absence of Jamie, the Goats felt a little too British as Baz ball took over and they collapsed”
-
It got to 10 runs needed for with 12 balls left and 3 wickets in hand - Daniel was bowled for a very good 50 with 8 now needed off 9. Jordan took a tactical attempt on the last ball of the over knowing that Tim would be on strike the next over...leaving us needing 8 off the last over with Shane joining Tim.
-
Their no.3 batsman was given the responsibility of the last over and started bowling spin... which Tim stepped to the off side on the 2nd ball and smashed it through the open fine leg area for 4. The bowler switched to medium pace and promptly bowled a wide... leaving 3 needed off 4. Two dot balls... 3 needed off 2.
-
Time then got what he was looking for - a short ball outside of off that was smashed to the boundary and a win by 1 wicket with a ball to spare.
The goats keep rolling nonetheless, with their first trip away upcoming in six weeks to take them swimmingly into Christmas top of the ladder!

H Grade v Yokine away
-
The H grade boys personified the Christmas spirit early by each wearing a Christmas sticker on their whites in honour of Father Christmas. After complaints earlier in the week about not getting enough opportunities with the bat, Mitch alongside Luke was sent out to open. The H grade boys were certain about being in safe hands after Luke messaged us last night to let us know he was feeling ripe for a century. Despite the confidence, 7 balls in he scooped it up to the bowler only to be dropped, to then do the exact same thing the next delivery and be caught. In marched Dylan and you could see the opposition was trembling with each stride he took. Together with Mitch they steadied the ship before Dylan was caught on 23 which for half the H grade boys would be a top score, but for Dylan 102 runs short of his average. Trevor and Scotty were the two batters to follow and each of them looked likely to tear the game apart before getting caught as well.
-
Mitch was the next to depart after drinks when he missed a full toss, allegedly though, it dipped a mile. The H grade boys looked in trouble as we were well in truly into the tail. Jake departed quickly, and so did fill ins Tom H and Tyler. In a flash we were 7/85 and desperately needed a hero. Fill in Cam and Tom Walsh stepped to the crease so we knew Tom was going to be able to score at least 1.75 runs, but nobody could’ve predicted what happened next. In a scene straight out of the 300 Cam and Tom dug deep and survived an avalanche from the Yokine attack as they combined for a match high 28 run partnership, with Tom finding his way to a 22* and the Goats found their way to a total of 131 which seemed like a strong score on the Yokine pitch.
-
Tom Walsh and Mitch opened the attack as per usual but they didn’t seem as effective as the opposition seemed to like the pace. In a move that showcased his cricketing experience, Trev brought Dylan and Jake into the attack and immediately Yokine looked uncomfortable. It was only a matter of time before Dylan found his first showing there’s nothing he can’t do. Jake found an edge in his next over but, despite Trev's wisdom, he dropped the catch in the cordon showing that he can change a game with one decision, but not with two hands. This however didn’t faze Jake as he went on to claim two wickets in his next over, with Trev also making up for the drop and collecting a wicket to leave Yokine 4/48.
-
Dylan found the next by dismantling the off-stump and the pressure must’ve been too much for the next batter as he ran himself out for a duck. Despite a 11 ball opening over, consisting of 4 wides, a no ball and a finger wag to the opposition batsman indicating no run there fill in Scott found a wicket with his final delivery. Finally the Harts took care of business as Trevor dismissed the next and Tom H finishing the game for us with just his third delivery.
-
I think there’s no better way to sum up today than by using the wise words of Audrey Hepburn when she said “I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.” Today the H grade boys showcased laughter, stayed strong during the tough times, but most importantly we believed in Tom Walsh which gave him the ability to perform a Christmas miracle. Thank you to fill ins Tom H, Cam, Scott, Tyler and Neil, and well done.

I Grade
CBGRCC won the toss and chose to bat. After a cautious three maiden over start, Anthony Fisher and Jack Wheeler made steady progress until Anthony was bowled on 32 following his 54-run partnership with Jack. Xavier Carr and Jack then put on 134 runs with a lovely selection of 4’s and 6’s, as well as several 3’s before Jack was caught on 73. Xavier partnered with David Woolfe for an additional 2 runs before being run out on 78 aggressively attempting a second run. David departed for 2 and Anthony Crocker was harshly adjudged LBW for a ‘golden’ before Darren Thompson and Matthew Fisher combined to make 6 bringing the total to 5-197 at tea.
-
Western Wolves’ innings was greatly assisted by several dropped CBGRCC catches. WW didn’t lose a wicket until they had put on 92, with fill in, Aries Lahooti-Strand, picking up the wicket with Jack taking the catch. We got prematurely excited when we took two wickets with WW on 97, the first LBW by Thommo, and the second following some quick thinking by Anthony F running in from mid-wicket to remove the bails while the two WW players discussed the exceptional BBQing that was occurring. There was much yelling and gesticulating.
-
Our 4th and final wicket came off Sohael’s bowling with WW on 168 with Erik C taking the catch. Sohael and Jack made best efforts to keep the run rate down to a dull roar in the last 10 overs. Having earlier been ‘taken out’ while fielding a throw over the stumps by a WW player taking a quick single earlier in the match, Matthew F came back on to bowl in the penultimate over and managed to keep them to six with an excellent mix of slower and quicker deliveries. With WW needing 2 to win, David W came back on for the final over but, alas, they made the required runs off the first ball leaving I Grade with 3 games each lost by less than 3 runs this season. Round 9 next sees I Grade making its way inland with 7 of the remaining 9 games to be played away from the cooling breeze of City Beach.

The club will be hosting a presentation after the game tomorrow (Sat 13/12/2025) to celebrate two players 100 game milestone.
It's been a couple of years since the last 100 gamer milestone so we will also be putting some food on to celebrate the milestones and the end of 2025.
-
Two teams will be away at Coolbinia - so will need to travel back to the club afterwards.
-
Existing 100 game members are requested to bring their own mugs - and former members are always welcome to pop down - hoping to be a 7-ish pm Presentation depending on the ending times of the games.
-
President Tristan Showers played his 100 game about 4 weeks ago and Jordan Brock will be playing his 100th tomorrow.
Coincidentally both were the captains of the dual Premiership year in 2020-21.

D Division
Another home game, another win. Tristan won the toss! and sent us into bat, telling the team that our stacked batting lineup meant 200 was the expectation. Gareth and Inesh put up another 50 partnership, with Gareth finally breaking into the double digits comfortably, before he swiped at a wide and Inesh playing all over a straight one.
-
Jamie’s bad day out started with a duck (which Tristan was quick to remind him of at post game beers), bringing the man in form Tristan in. Supported by small cameos from Neil, Josh M and James (who left Inesh no choice but to put the finger up after he left a straight one onto his back pad), Tristan ran out a fine 70 runs, bringing the team to a respectable 194.
--
Within 4 balls of the innnings James had got Darlington’s danger man out, and it was all downhill from there. He foxed another couple batsmen by dangling a few wides before bowling a mean straight one, whilst no Tristan bowling meant Clive, Jordan and Shane tore through the rest of the team. Jordan took 4, but couldn’t get the fifth despite the umbrella field we had for 10 balls, and a runout from Inesh and wicket from Josh M meant the Goats had another huge win wrapped up as our opposition was bowled out for the most Goat number right now - 67. The only downside? Dr Jamie, sprinting in for a catch no one would take, doing his hamstring. Injury clearly runs, or limps, through the Wood name.
-
We’ve given ourselves two games in hand at the top to prepare for what could be a very lean Christmas period, as many players take their well earned break from cricket (or in Gareth’s case, just a break so he can come back and score more).

H Division
Away v Carlisle CC. In what was beautiful conditions for cricket the Goats elected to bat first with our opener Luke missing in action. Instead, fresh off his absence this gave Lachy and Alex the opportunity to step to the plate. It was a slow start for Lachy as he respected the first two deliveries of the game before launching the third for a six. He continued to move in this fashion as he hit another six not long after before unfortunately being dismissed by a one handed screamer in the slips. Alex kept the strike moving before he too was dismissed by a catch and suddenly the Goats were 2/30. Unfortunately for Carlisle, this meant Jack and Dylan came to the crease.
-
Together the boys displayed champagne cricket as they hit shots all around the ground. Jack made his way to a sexy 69 before he was also caught out and Dylan smashed eight fours and eight sixes to eventually make his way to a 136*. Fill in Charlie came to the crease after Jack was dismissed and displayed some power hitting before he was controversially stumped. Although he was given not out by square leg, Charlie showed excellent sportsmanship by walking. The innings concluded with Jake coming to the crease and finding 3 runs, finishing with red ink and the Goats ending up 4/253.
-
Mitch got things moving early by dismissing the opener thanks to a chest mark by Jake at point. Mitch continued to strike as he found 3 more in his opening spell with Tom also coming to the party in between the madness and finding himself a wicket. Carlisle found themselves 5/26 and we looked destined to have this wrapped up soon.
-
The opposition skipper was causing us some trouble before Charlie took care of business and ripped his leg stump out of the ground. Luke dished up some slop and managed to jag himself a wicket off an almost double bouncer. Wade had seen enough of Luke and came on to bowl and took the next two wickets. We had Carlisle 9/93 and Mitch came on and bowled an over of off spin to claim the final wicket of the game and his last for the 5fa. I'm not sure how I feel about that but it finished the game for us quickly as the Goats recorded an 158 run win to boost our percentage 0.8 higher then the next best team.
-
In games like this I think it’s important to remember the words of Master Oogway. “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.” All the boys relished their opportunities in the field today by living in their moment, and this is a mindset the H grade boys should bring each week moving forward. We play away v Yokine next week who are 6th on the ladder

At home to Mount Lawley Inglewood, our track record of late hasn't been good. For once, John won the toss and elected to bat. A decision he momentarily regretted as we quickly lost our 2 best batsmen, Waz and Xavier for ducks leaving us 2/5. Enter Jake who, together with Anthony Fisher put on a 101 run partnership to have us at 3/106 before falling for 62 off 44 balls. Anthony (40 off 72 balls) fell the same over to have us 4/106 at drinks, our best first 20 overs performance this season. Daniel Gandy and David Woolfe then combined for a 90 run partnership, with Woolfy getting his first 50 (in his first game for the season and at the club). He fell for 54 off 51 balls. Thommo came in for a quick 6 off 6 with Daniel (37 not out off 62) and Matthew Fisher (1 not out off 2) not out after 40 for a total 6/213.

A buoyant mood taking to the field, Skipper was all too aware that we have struggled to bowl out the opposition, only getting 8 wickets in our 4 losses and letting the last 2 batsmen score too many runs. Not to be today. Wickets fell at regular intervals, Sohael removing the 2 openers, the first was a caught and bowled (he had to catch his own ball as the 2 previous deliveries were dropped catches) and the second removed their danger batsman with a great delivery taking out middle stump. Daniel Gandy (4/13 off 6) and Darren Thompson (3/11 off 4) were the stars with the ball, as they bamboozled the batsmen and Matthew Fisher pipped in with 1/20 off 3. Our strongest win of the season, winning by 111 runs.

This win takes us to 4th, one win behind 3rd but only 1 win ahead of 8th. With such a strong win, our Q is now the strongest. This week we take on Western wolves, who beat us in the first game of the season. Last year we beat them on the return match on CB Upper so lets hope we can do it again. We have a number out this week as the Gandys, Skip and Jake are away.
