By-election costs - min $83,000 💰💰

The by-elections in Como and Moresby Wards will cost the City of South Perth a minimum of $83,000 + GST, along with potential additional casual staff costs.

These costs are unbudgeted as the 26/27 Budget was adopted prior to the by-elections being required and will be incurred early this financial year.

Como Ward currently has 7403 eligible voters and in the Oct 23 by-election, the voting rate was only 27.44%!!

As I’ve been door knocking, I’ve heard some voter fatigue and disengagement at local govt level, but as ratepayers, we are footing the bill 💵 – so why not vote? 🗳

If you’re unsure who to vote for, contact the candidates and ask them about issues that concern you.

This is a difficult post to write as we expect the people who read it will not be the people we want to reach. So please help us get the message out.

A few days ago, a dead baby bobtail was found and it appears to have been attacked by a dog.

The Town of Victoria Park has advised they will increase the ranger presence but that cannot be the only solution.

If you feel comfortable doing so, we ask responsible dog walkers to remind others to keep their dogs on lead in the bushland. In addition to this photo, there is further information as to the importance of keeping dogs on leads on our website. Any further advice is welcome.

My why

My decision to stand for Council didn’t begin with politics. It began with finding a community worth protecting.

In 2019, my husband and I found our home in Kensington. We were warmly welcomed by wonderful neighbours and quickly felt as though we had hit the jackpot- a beautiful area with established trees and a genuine sense of community.

At university, I learnt one of the most important principles of primary health care: prevention is better than a cure. That principle stayed with me throughout my healthcare career.

When the opportunity arose to join the City of South Perth’s Public Health Advisory Group, I leapt at it. I saw the valuable work being done, but I also saw opportunities to do better. I was later elected to represent the group in the development of the City’s Urban Greening Strategy.

Health and urban greening may appear to be separate issues, but they are deeply connected.

When caring for long-term patients in Intensive Care, we would sometimes take them outside. Fresh air, sunlight and a glimpse of the natural world could make a visible difference to their wellbeing. It reinforced something I have seen throughout my career: our surroundings matter to our health, recovery and quality of life.

That is why protecting and growing our urban canopy isn’t simply a campaign talking point for me. It is grounded in professional experience, community involvement and a genuine understanding of why these spaces matter.

I won’t promise what I cannot deliver or tell people what I think they want to hear. I will listen, do the work and remain accountable for the decisions I make.

In our home, we often say: actions speak louder than words.

My commitment to this community didn’t begin when I nominated for Council- and it won’t end when the election is over.

That is my why.
