Currie Wins the Finale!
Tonight at the Premier Speedway, Warrnambool, Kaleb Currie (Hardwyer Murphy Motorsport)put in a great performance to grab the feature win in the fourth and final round of the Pro Speedcar Week.
It was a huge night of racing that saw its fair share of thrills and spills, including Dillon Ghent (Ghent Motorsport) going upside down in heat one after collecting the wall and Jesse Nicholas looping his #7 machine in heat two and leaving Rhys Birkett (Birkett Racing "The Real Deal") nowhere to go, both cars rolling over in the same place as Ghent earlier.
Despite the crashes, eighteen of the nineteen cars who started the night would start the feature, but everyone got a bit excited on the first start, seeing it called back quickly. Considering that the Series points were on the line with any number of cars capable of taking the overall win, the excitement was certainly understandable.
The second start saw everyone fighting hard, Dylan Menz (Menz Motorsport) getting the initial lead as Nick Parker (Allcott Hire - PMT Racing - V39) utilised the bottom to move into second ahead of Tom Payet (Bennett Motorsport) who shot into third ahead of last start winner Jack McCarthy (Hardwyer Murphy Motorsport).
The first and only yellow of the race came out on lap three as Luke Storer (Luke Storer Racing) found himself spinning to a stop, the field forced to line up nose to tail for another attempt with Storer resuming from the rear.
Menz led away running the highline, Parker stuck to the low line and Payet would also lock onto the top of the track, no one making any ground at the front until Payet went for a move on lap five, the two making contact as Payet managed to get into second before suddenly slowing and heading infield with a flat left rear tyre.
This would leave Menz well ahead of Parker, with Currie, McCarthy and Mitch Saunderson (Mitch Saunderson Racing) rounding out the top five with eight complete.
Parker did all he could to hold on to second as lap after lap Currie would apply the blowtorch, sliding by a number of times, but each time Parker was able to hold the position as they crossed the line.
At the halfway point Mez was out to a one and a half second lead ahead of Currie with Parker, McCarthy and Nathan Smee now rounding out the top five.
Luke Storer bounced back from his earlier issues and raced his way back into sixth, getting by Smee for fifth on lap nineteen, while up front Menz was starting to have his lead chipped into, Currie starting to get a wriggle on and closing the gap to half a second with eight laps to go.
The lead duo approached lapped traffic shortly after, and all of a sudden Currie put the slidejob on Menz to take the lead with six to go, while further back McCarthy was under pressure from Storer, who would move into fourth.
Currie, Menz, Parker, Storer and McCarthy were the top five with five laps to go, but Storer certainly wasnβt going to be content with that, grabbing third from Parker with three laps remaining.
From here the order remained unchanged, Currie going on to record his first ever PSW feature race win after coming so close on four occasions previously defeating Menz who grabbed his first ever PSW podium and Storer. Featuring on the podium means Currie also now has the equal most podium finishes in PSW history, joining the great Nathan Smee with five in what was an epic way to finish the series.
