Want 10 more mph in your 50s? Start here šÆ
I put this exact question to physio Ryan Hudson (Ryan | Freo Golf Physio and Fitness ) on our monthly Academy coaching call: whatās the safest first step for a golfer around 50 (or older) who wants to add real speed?
His answer - get assessed first.
A TPI screen (plus the fitness/power screen) shows you what your foundation actually looks like: your mobility, your control, and your strength in particular.
Chasing speed without knowing what your body can handle is how golfers sometimes get hurt.
Build the foundation first, then add the speed on top of it.
Thatās the order that keeps you fast and healthy for years to come.
Have you ever got hurt chasing speed? š

Hired the best videographer in the business. Heās 5.
Camera angles need a bit of work but weāll get there š
I feel thereās huge value in including my kids in parts of my business.
I want my kids to be self reliant too, and not have to give up their sovereignty to governments and others to save them when they get older.
Showing him what goes into daddyās work is a big part of that.
Canāt wait to do more of this. Heāll get better with the camera angles. Maybe heāll even come out on course and film for me when Iām back playing properly.
These were also the longest swings Iāve made since surgery š
Who else gets their kids involved in what they do?
Your body will always find a way to hit the ball. The question is - at what cost?
This was a moment from our Academy call last night with physio Ryan Hudson (Ryan | Freo Golf Physio and Fitness ) that stuck with me.
As golfers, weāre incredibly good at getting it done. No matter what our body gives us on the day, weāll find a way to strike that ball and move it forward.
But finding a way isnāt the same as finding the best way.
Some of those workarounds cost you distance. Some cost you consistency. And some, over time, cost you your body š¤
Great chat, Ryan, plenty of gold in this one for the Academy crew.
Yesterday I didnāt coach a single lesson.
Normally Fridays are flat out - online coaching most of the day, academy member check-ins, content, plans.
But yesterday was my sonās birthday, and I got to be there for ALL of it.
Cuddles as he woke up. His face when he saw the Spider-Man balloons (heās never actually watched Spider-Man - still obsessed š). I got to be parent helper at his kindy all morning. His party at the park with a handful of his best mates. Emmaās delish āhealthy birthday cakes.ā Playing with his new toys until bedtime.
It got me thinking about the realities of running your own golf coaching business:
1ļøā£ Youāll work way MORE hours than a normal 40-hour job. Not less.
2ļøā£ You never fully switch off. Kids were asleep by 9pm. Then I was on the laptop prepping for a big weekend of coaching and catching up on messages.
3ļøā£ Thereās no āsomeone else will handle it.ā Coaching, academy support, content, marketing, admin - itās all you.
4ļøā£ Your health becomes part of the job. If I donāt look after my body and my hip rehab, the whole thing stops. So the gym isnāt optional - itās scheduled like a lesson.
5ļøā£ Life is FULL. If Iām not coaching in person or online, Iām creating content, supporting academy members, or training. Thereās rarely an empty hour.
6ļøā£ But you get to CHOOSE. No boss to ask. No leave form. When my son wakes up on his birthday, his dad is there - for the whole day. Thatās not something a job title or bigger salary can buy.
I didnāt build this business to work less. I built it to work a little more on my terms, whilst doing something I love, and Iām passionate about.
Yesterday, my terms were Spider-Man balloons and party food at the park.
Back in the studio this weekend coaching in person clients in Perth. Wouldnāt have it any other way. ā³
If youāre a golfer chasing better ball striking, thatās what I do the other 6 days a week š
