Straddie Golf club members gathered for a special celebration this week to wish Happy Birthday to Geneve Hague who is now 80years young! Geneve is one of our island community’s most tireless volunteers and contributors - she’s always helping others and we appreciate all that she does! And she’s a pretty good golfer too! This week with the help of her golfing friends she was literally in the pink! And that cake was delicious - thanks to James and Joan from The Nineteenth Stradbroke Golf Club for organising the cake from island baker Steve Martin - and for the members who decorated the clubhouse and provided the spread. And they all had a beautiful day on the Straddie course to play a nine hole comp to work off the calories! Happy Birthday Geneve!

After many years one of the normally very shy local koalas has decided to go public at Straddie Golf Club. It’s been hanging around and spotted by golfers and Joan and James from The Nineteenth Stradbroke Golf Club . Volunteer members planted a plantation of koala trees on the alongside the Seventh fairway some years ago and the trees are now maturing. But club president Peter Turner says it’s likely the older swamp mahoganies are this particular koala’s food source of choice as it has been sighted near them during its current stay. “It’s probable this particular koala is a young male who has been isolated from its colony in and around Brown Lake on the edges of the golf course. We know we have plenty of koalas’ favourite food in the plantation so it’s probably only a matter of time before some of the colony koalas spread east to find them. We are very lucky to have so much wildlife on the golf course. We actively care for the territories for masked lapwing families, bee-eaters, and black glossy cockatoos by ensuring we have the right trees and vegetation for them on the course - also lately we have noticed the light fawn young kangaroos on the course. They are not true albinos - they are very pale from a genetic mutation - three joeys like this have been born this season. Pale and albino kangaroos with little skin pigment usually don’t survive long on the wide plains of Australia in intense sunlight. We maybe lucky on the Island as these pale Eastern Grey Roos have plenty of overhead from our bush cover for protection.”
Also don’t forget the Minjerribah Photography competition is on until October. The theme is “ Wildlife Encounters”. Visitors are welcome to come to the club, sign in, receive a code, and photograph our wildlife as long as they don’t get too close! Details are on our website and on the Straddie Arts Trail website.
