Why Protein Matters More Than You Might Think

When you hear the word protein, you might immediately think of protein shakes, gym-goers and building muscle. But protein plays a much bigger role in our bodies than that, and getting enough is important at every stage of life.

Protein is one of the building blocks our bodies use to grow and repair tissues. It helps maintain muscles and bones, supports our immune system and is involved in producing hormones and enzymes that keep our bodies functioning.

Why is protein important as we get older?
As we age, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass and strength. Staying active, particularly with resistance and strength-based exercise, can help slow this process, and getting enough protein gives the body the nutrients it needs to maintain and repair muscle.

This doesn't mean you need to start drinking protein shakes!
Plenty of everyday foods are naturally rich in protein.

Where can we get it?
Protein can come from both animal and plant-based foods, including:
• Eggs
• Chicken, beef and other meats
• Fish and seafood
• Milk, yoghurt and cheese
• Beans, lentils and chickpeas
• Tofu and tempeh
• Nuts and seeds

Including a source of protein across your meals throughout the day can be an easy way to make sure you're regularly giving your body what it needs.

Some days everything goes to plan. Other days… not so much!

The same goes for exercise. You might miss a class, have less energy than usual, need to change an exercise or simply have one of those days where everything feels a little harder.

That's life.

One imperfect day doesn't undo all the days you did show up, and it certainly doesn't mean you need to start again.

Tomorrow is another day, and we'll be here when you're ready.

Carbohydrates have had a bit of a bad reputation over the years, but our bodies actually have some pretty important jobs for them!

Carbs are one of our body's main sources of energy. They help fuel our muscles when we exercise, while our brain also relies heavily on glucose for energy to help us think, concentrate and get through the day.

Our bodies can even store some carbohydrate in our muscles and liver as glycogen, ready to use when we need extra energy, including during a workout.

And carbs aren't just bread and pasta! Fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, legumes and dairy can all provide carbohydrates, along with other important nutrients such as fibre, vitamins and minerals.

So rather than thinking of carbohydrates as something we need to avoid, think of them as one of the ways we fuel our bodies for all the things we ask them to do, whether that's a BFF class, a walk, a busy day at work or simply everyday life.

Stress doesn’t only affect how we feel mentally. Our bodies can feel it too.

When we’re stressed, our bodies release hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This is a normal response and can actually be helpful in short bursts, but when stress hangs around for a long time, it can start to take its toll.

You might notice you’re not sleeping as well, you feel more tired than usual, your appetite changes or it’s harder to find the energy and motivation for the things you normally do. Over time, ongoing stress can also affect things like heart health and immune function.

We can’t avoid stress altogether (wouldn’t that be nice!), but there are things that can help. Moving your body, getting enough sleep, spending time with people you enjoy and simply giving yourself some time to switch off can all make a difference.

Looking after your health isn’t only about exercise and what you eat. Giving your mind and body a chance to rest and recharge matters too.
