The Space is turning 25! 🥳

And we want to celebrate with the people who have been part of our story along the way.

Teachers from every era. Former and current students. Dancers, choreographers, artists, performers, staff, studio hirers, creatives, friends and familiar faces we may not have seen for years.

Imagine walking into The Space and not knowing who you’ll bump into next…
There’ll be music, dancing, pop-up performances, freestyle moments, stories, laughter, old friends and plenty of reminiscing.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A ‘DANCER’ TO START DANCING. 💛

One of the things we hear all the time from adults thinking about taking a class is:

“I’d love to dance, but I’m worried everyone else will know what they’re doing.”

Here’s the thing — everyone in the room had a first class once.

- They walked through the door not knowing the steps.
- Some came on their own.
- Some hadn’t danced since they were kids.
- Some had never danced at all.

And then, somewhere along the way, the unfamiliar faces became the people they look forward to seeing every week.

That’s a pretty big part of what dance at The Space is about.

Yes, you’ll learn to dance. You’ll improve, get things wrong, laugh at yourself and have those brilliant moments when something suddenly clicks.

But you might also find your people.

We’re so excited to have Ben back at The Space! And he’s kicking off his classes THIS MONDAY!

Benjamin Curé was born and raised in Melbourne, training on full scholarships at both The Edge Performers School and the Space Dance and Arts Centre. In 2015, he founded Lion Heart Dance Company which has since produced multiple seasons of work. Curé's performance career has witnessed him work with a diverse range of companies, including Vertical Shadows Dance Company and Opera Australia, in conjunction with reaching the top 100 of So You Think You Can Dance Australia (2014).

Recently, Curé performed in Graeme Murphy's 'Turanndot' with Opera Australia in December of 2019. Curé is an esteemed choreographer with a history of choreographing for music videos, international conferences and industry events. His founding company Lion Heart has produced 9 seasons of work, a dance film in partnership with PRIDE Productions, been the recipient of multiple Arts and Culture grants from the City of Stonnington and been commissioned by the City of Boroondara to produce a season at the Hawthorn Arts Centre.

In 2024, his video work, 'Rubik's Fugue', was selected for the VCE dance prescribed list, becoming the first Victorian choreographer, and one of only a small handful of Australian choreographers, to have their work included.

Ben is an innovative choreographer, a passionate educator and a relentless creative force within the local arts scene.

Behind the doors of The Space 💜

If you’ve only ever come in for your class and headed straight to your studio, you might not realise just how much is happening around you.

Upstairs, downstairs, around corners and behind doors, The Space is full of studios — and on any given day they’re filled with dancers, teachers, rehearsals, classes, auditions, creative projects and people simply doing what they love.

For almost 25 years, these rooms have seen first dance classes and final rehearsals, new friendships, big ideas, nervous auditions, show preparations, lots of laughter and an enormous amount of dancing.

It’s not particularly quiet.
It’s definitely not boring.

And there’s always music spilling out from somewhere. 💜
