ALEC GOODFELLOW

Alec joined the Preston Angling Club on 14 August 1958, having been a member for 68 years
He was a very dedicated and much respected member and was always doing something for the club
Alec held many positions within the club,
He was elected Committee Member 13 times 1967-1972, 1973/74, 1980-1982 1985/6, and 1990-1993, 1994/95
He served on the social committee for approximately 15 years and was the club Social Secretary from 1971 to 1974
Was the club’s Auditor for 1993/94
and on several occasions he even played Santa to the enjoyment of both little and big kids (1973, 2005, 2010?)
Alec was Vice President in 1979/80 and again from 2002 to 2005
Then in 2005 he was elected president until he stepped aside in 2008.
Alec had an idea of a club 25 and 50 year medallion and set about making the tooling to create them, and along with Arthur Nixon they produced our 25 year Sterling Silver medallion and the 50 year gold medallion. (which are displayed).
Alec also envisaged the idea of inserting a diamond into the eye of the fish for a 60 year medallion, which unfortunately didn’t eventuate.
As the Junior Club was disbanded due to the war and not restarted afterwards Alec along with Les Penrose, became instrumental in junior members being reintroduced into the club in 1984
He was proud to see his son Steven along with several others to being the first juniors to be admitted. Steve is still a member with the club as is Les’s son John
He also instigated the banning of smoking in the club rooms to many members delight and some not so
He was a true caricature and Many stories of his antics and tribulations could be told, and will continue to be told
such as the rivalry between himself, an avid Fitzroy Supporter and Bob Ford --- Collingwood, where in earlier days Alec was behind several members one night at Kyalite hoisting Bob’s Collingwood pillow way up into a tree top. And of course you can imagine Bob’s reaction in the morning. It was a good rivalry
Alec of course loved his fishing both saltwater and freshwater having achieved the saltwater runner up trophy in 1974. The saltwater championship trophy in 1979 and runner up trophy again in 1998
Alex was a regular at Kyalite where He and Ross Halligan always fished the same spot, and they never moved.
Alec was known on these competitions for taking along his bag of whiting fillets and having a cook up for the camp to the much appreciation of the members
He was always out in the bay every chance he got
And was proud to have his boys fishing beside him whether it be in his boat or on a river bank somewhere as long as they were fishing.
One time Alec took another member in his boat, leaving Steven (who was about 6 at the time) behind.
Steve apparently cried for days.
Alec never did that again and told Steve that he would always be first in the boat
Alex made a significant contribution to our club and was very active from his beginning years until 2006? when he moved to Dromana yet still he continued as president until 2008
In 1987, for his dedication and hard work, Alec was awarded with a Life Membership of the club
He was one of the few elite members who achieved 50 years of continuous membership, receiving his gold medallion in 2008 (the ones he and Arthur created)
Alex will truly be remembered fondly by the members and friends who had the pleasure of knowing him, he was and always will be a true clubman and had the respect of the many friends he made along his way
