Perfect conditions greeted athletes on New Town Bay this morning as the Kirby Cup kicked off the 26/27 rowing season. Over 100 club and school rowers hit the water for the traditional opener hosted by Buckingham Rowing Club. A brilliant morning of racing, smiles and support from friends and crews on the shoreline — great to see the community back together.

🚣‍♀️ Congratulations, Sienna Weissel!

Hobart rower Weissel, currently at St Michael's Collegiate School, is heading to the USA! She's signed with Platform Sports Management and is aiming to continue her rowing and studies in the US college system from Fall 2027.

We can't wait to see where this next chapter takes her. Go Sienna, and keep us posted! 💙

📣Rowing Tasmania is proud to release its Strategic Plan for 2027–2030, a roadmap for building a stronger, more connected and future-ready rowing community for all Tasmanians.

🤝Developed in close consultation with athletes, coaches, volunteers, clubs, schools and system partners across the state, the plan sets a clear direction for the next four years, one that aligns closely with Rowing Australia's 5+5 Plan and Row Well Strategy to ensure our sport grows in step with the national landscape.

🏆The Strategic Plan is built around five interconnected pillars: Participation & Growth, People & Culture, Governance, Commercial, and Community & System Alignment. Together, they chart a course for delivering safe, inclusive and high-quality experiences for everyone in the sport, strengthening our organisational capability, modernising our systems, and building the partnerships that will underpin Tasmanian rowing's long-term sustainability.

Inside, you'll find:

➡️Our purpose, vision and the values that guide how we work
➡️Clear priorities and measurable goals for each of the five strategic pillars
➡️An implementation timeline spanning foundational work in 2027, accelerated innovation in 2028, and full performance outcomes by 2029–2030
➡️The outcomes we're aiming for by 2030, from growth in participation and volunteer numbers to a stronger school-to-club pathway and an upgraded Lake Barrington facility

🚣We invite every part of the Tasmanian rowing community — clubs, schools, athletes, coaches, volunteers and supporters — to read the plan, share your thoughts, and help us bring it to life.

Thank you to the Australian Paralympic Team for this feature on one of our incredible para athletes, Ella Marshall.

For most of her rowing career, Ella Marshall simply “got on with it”.

The water and the rituals of the sport had long been familiar: mist rising over the Mersey River, numb fingers wrapped around worn oars, salt and river air in the lungs, and countless early mornings launching out from Devonport’s Mersey Rowing Club on Tasmania’s north-west coast.

The idea that it might one day carry her towards the Australian Para Rowing Team was not.

That changed early last year when a question about eligibility set her on a different course entirely. What followed was not a reinvention, but the discovery of a pathway she hadn’t known was hers to take.

TASSIE ROWER INTO THE A-FINAL!

Huge result from Tasmania’s own Ella Marshall at the World Rowing Championships! Racing alongside Sam Stunell in the PR3 Mixed Double Sculls, the Christine MacLaren-coached crew stormed their heat to book a spot in Friday’s A-Final — finishing 2nd behind Germany, ahead of China.

For Ella, it’s her debut senior World Championships — and she didn’t let the moment pass her by:

“I took a moment at the start to reflect on where we have come from… There is nothing like pulling on the green and gold. Never, in my life, did I think that I would be here.” 💚💛

The pair have now backed up their Lucerne World Cup III bronze with a strong statement on the world stage — third time in the boat together, and it’s clicking.

Bring on Friday’s A-Final. Go Ella! 🔥

Congratulations Ella Marshall
Rowing Tasmania is bursting with pride! Our own Ella Marshall has been selected to represent Australia in the PR3 Mixed Double Scull at the 2026 World Championships in Amsterdam this August 🎉
Ella will be teaming up with Sam Stunell under coach Christine MacLaren, carrying Tasmania’s colours onto the world stage.
This is a moment to celebrate not just Ella, but everyone behind her — her coaches, training partners, family, and the whole Tasmanian rowing community that helps athletes like Ella shine. Para rowing pathways don’t happen by accident, and this selection is proof of what our community builds together.
Good luck in Amsterdam, Ella, we’ll all be cheering you on! 💙
