SHADOWFAX AT AURC 🚀

On October 4th, we launched Shadowfax at the Australian Universities Rocket Competition, marking the team’s return to competition since 2024.

A massive congratulations to all of our engineers and team members who were apart of Shadowfax, where your days and nights finally paid off.

Along the way we also picked up the Ascent “It’s Not Rocket Surgery” award for the Best Rocket Livery at the Competition!

This project would’ve been nothing without our sponsors and supporters, to whom we thank for their ongoing support of the team and our projects.

A special thank you to RMIT High Velocity (Hive) for their support on launch day with helping out with their GSE to get our rocket into the air.

AURC Conference Day 2026

In the build up to our launch of Shadowfax at AURC, we’ve had the opportunity to present at the conference day held in White Cliffs.

Targeting the public and a panel of judges, we showed off the systems of Shadowfax, including Aerostructures, Avionics, Propulsions and Recovery.

As a result, we also passed compliance checks and our Flight Safety Review with flying colours, alongside positive feedback from the judges.

Bluesat also presented their payload with an overview of its features its mission objectives to 3D print in low gravity environments.

Shadowfax now awaits its launch in the next few days!

SHADOWFAX IS BORN 🐴

Introducing our entry to the 2026 Australian Universities Rocketry Competition, Shadowfax.

Inspired by Gandalf’s Horse from The Lord of the Rings, Shadowfax flies on a COTS Hybrid motor, targeting 10k feet.

In collaboration with Bluesat for their Satellite Payload, Olorin, they’re testing Resin 3D Printing in Low Gravity environments.

With our teams now in White Cliffs for the competition, we’re doing our final preparations for Conference and Launch Days.

We’re super excited to see Shadowfax and all the other teams’ rockets launch!

SHADOWFAX TAKES FLIGHT 🚀

In preparation for UNSW Rocketry’s entry into the 2026 Australian Universities Rocketry Competition, our team successfully launched and recovered Shadowfax last weekend in Serpentine, Victoria.

Following just a two-week turnaround from our previous attempt, the flight gave us the opportunity to successfully test and validate our key subsystems, achieving the majority of our mission objectives and providing valuable data ahead of competition.

A massive congratulations to all of our student engineers who took part in months of design, manufacturing and testing to finally see Shadowfax take flight.

As we pack for White Cliffs, we’re making a few final improvements and giving Shadowfax its final coat of paint.

Two weeks ago, our team travelled to Serpentine, Victoria, for a practice launch of Shadowfax ahead of AURC, where we finally saw months of hard work come to fruition.

We worked tirelessly throughout the integration process, operating as if it were the real competition. Despite a motor misfire on ignition, a lot of valuable experience was gained in preparation for our next launch attempt.

With AURC now only a couple of weeks away, we’re making a few final improvements to Shadowfax’s systems before heading out to White Cliffs to compete.
