DID YOU KNOW?
A typical netball game lasts 48 minutes for juniors and 60 minutes for seniors. A player can only hold the ball for up to three seconds, meaning there can be well over 960 passes in a junior game and well over 1,200 passes in a senior game.
Every time a player catches the ball, umpires are assessing footwork, contact, obstruction, offside, how possession was gained and more. At the same time, they're also watching the movement and positioning of the other players on court.
They're not just deciding what happened—they're also determining the order in which it happened, often while several things are happening at once.
Across an entire game, that adds up to tens of thousands of decisions. Even with two umpires sharing the workload, each official makes thousands of judgement calls every match, often in a matter of seconds.
Not every umpire is an adult, and every umpire, regardless of age or experience, continues to learn. They've put their hand up to support our netball community, and they deserve our respect, encouragement and thanks.
