Surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, surf club Nippers. They're all very different adventures, but they have one thing in common. They all start with swimming. 🏊

Here's why...

🌊 Surfing: fall off and you're in the ocean, not a pool. Rips can pull a tired swimmer out of their depth, so health experts say you should be a strong swimmer before you start.

🛶 Kayaking: capsizing is part of paddling. Staying calm, treading water and getting back to your kayak is a swimmer's job.

🏄 Paddle boarding: fall off and you're in open water. The same skills apply: float, tread water, get yourself back on.

🏖️ Nippers: it all happens at the beach, around water. Surf clubs check that kids can swim and float before they start, and Nippers isn't a learn to swim program.

The skills underneath are simple: float calmly, tread water and swim further. Build them early and school camps, carnivals and family beach holidays all open up too.

That's a wrap on Term 3 at Sherriffs Road Swimming Centre with last lessons of the term finishing today, 27th September! Learn2Swim is officially on its well-earned break. 🙌

What a term it's been. We welcomed a great group of new swimmers to the pool, watched confidence build week by week, and celebrated some proud pool deck moments. The standout of the term? The return of Time Trials Night 🏅 a huge success, packed with proud parents and even prouder kids. We can't wait to run it again for our southern Adelaide swimming families.

Term 4 lessons start Monday 12th October. If you haven't locked in your child's Term 4 lessons yet, don't wait - contact reception or comment SWIM below and one of our team will give you a call. 📞

A couple of housekeeping notes for the school holidays: we're closed on the weekends of Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th October, and Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th October. Full details are in the image above, save this post so you've got it handy. 📌

And as always, water safety comes first. Wherever your family is spending the holidays - pool, beach, or backyard. Please make sure there's always one dedicated water watcher actively supervising children in and around water. Not glancing over occasionally, actually watching the whole time.

This week's Meet the Instructor spotlight is on Ethan, one of our instructors here at Sherriffs Road Swimming Centre and quite possibly the most low key hardworking person on our team. 🙌

Ethan's been teaching with us for just under 2 years and has a real knack for freestyle, especially once "chin down" finally clicks for a student after weeks of practice. He says that phrase so often it apparently shows up in his dreams, notice he said dreams, not nightmares? The man really does love this job. 😉

Between lessons Ethan is out pulling weeds in the carpark or in and out of the plant room checking chemical levels, making sure everything stays balanced and crystal clear. He doesn't make a big deal of it, he just does it.

When we asked Ethan what sea creature he'd be, he said an Anomalocaris. If that means nothing to you, join the club. We had to look it up too, and once you see a picture you'll understand exactly why he picked it. 😂

Armbands mean they're safe. Splashing means they're swimming. A week of holiday fun means they've learned.

None of this is about parents getting it wrong. Floaties are cheap, everywhere, and marketed like safety gear, so it's an easy assumption to make. Nobody's ever actually walked parents through what's happening below the surface.

Here's what we know after over 50 years of teaching swimmers: real safety comes from skills. A child can look confident with armbands on and be a completely different swimmer without them. Splashing confidently in the shallow end and actually knowing how to float, breathe and move safely are two different things and every part of that has to be taught properly. 💙

It's also never too young to start. Our Water Babies program welcomes swimmers from 6 months, building water familiarity and confidence at their own pace. And a fun week of holiday splashing? Lovely for confidence, but it's regular, structured lessons with a consistent instructor that build real water safety over time. 🏊
