Ever felt your knee cave in and just... give way? 😳
For years, ACL injuries got blamed on anatomy.
Wider hips. Bigger Q-angle. The story was: some bodies are just "built at risk."
That story's outdated.
A 2021 study followed 482 elite youth footballers. It found something different.
When training load spikes were managed — tracking sudden jumps in training/game volume — injury risk dropped significantly.
Not because anatomy changed. Because demand stopped outpacing capacity.
Picture a typical junior athlete's week:
→ Club training Tuesday and Thursday
→ Rep trial Saturday morning
→ School carnival Monday
→ Back into club Tuesday
No single session looks unreasonable. Stacked together? That's a load spike most programs were never built for.
Hormonal cycle timing still plays a role in some research. That's real. But it's one variable — not the root cause it was once treated as.
The shift: worry less about what you can't change (hips, s*x, growth patterns). Focus more on what you can:
→ Managing weekly load across every team an athlete plays for
→ Building landing mechanics and single-leg strength
Save this for a coach juggling a multi-team athlete. Or a parent who's been told it's "just her hips."
