A big welcome to our four new BareBones Combatives apprentice instructors – Paul, Graham and Dave from the UK, and Lukasz from Poland! 👊

Over three days, followed by a final workshop on Sunday to help connect more of the dots, we explored how we manage ourselves, how that translates into physical action, and how to help others discover it for themselves.

For me, becoming an instructor goes well beyond knowing what to do. It’s learning to observe, ask better questions, adapt and help the person in front of you make progress.

Everyone brings their own experience and perspective. I’m looking forward to seeing what these lads discover, question, refine and develop as their understanding of BareBones grows.

I’m really pleased to welcome them into the BareBones community.

Completing the course is an important first step, and now there’s plenty of exploring ahead.

Inside out. Ground up. 💀

Another brilliant time fantastic Finland. 🇫🇮

I’ve just finished two update sessions with our four BareBones apprentice instructors, who completed their course last year, alongside a two-day workshop exploring the internal and external parts of BareBones Combatives.

I’m really pleased with how far they’ve come within themselves.

BareBones asks for quite a shift in how you think, move and approach training, especially when you already have years of experience in other systems and arts. Being willing to explore a different way of doing things takes openness, patience and a willingness to feel like a beginner again.

It’s been lovely to see what they’ve taken away, worked with and developed over the past year. That’s one of my favourite parts of teaching: coming back and seeing how people have made the learning their own.

Thank you to everyone else who joined us, asked questions, explored ideas and helped make the training so enjoyable.

And, as always in Finland, the good times haven’t stopped when the training finished. The friendships, conversations and laughs are a big part of what keeps me coming back.

Grateful to have these guys in my life and to be sharing this journey with them.

Until next time, Finland. ❤️

$5,382 raised for Camp Quality. ❤️

Over six weeks, the three of us set ourselves a challenge.

Thousands of punches.
Lots of sore arms.
Plenty of laughs.
And one goal: to raise as much money as we could for Camp Quality.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our Raw Life community, friends, family and supporters, together we raised $5,382.

An enormous thank you to everyone who donated, shared our posts, encouraged us, or simply cheered us on along the way. Every contribution made a difference.

Camp Quality does an amazing job supporting children facing cancer and their families, helping bring moments of fun, hope and laughter during incredibly difficult times. We’re proud that, together, we could play a small part in supporting that work.

A special thank you to Camp Quality for everything you do, and for allowing us to be part of your mission.

This wasn’t just our achievement, it belongs to everyone who got behind us.

From all three of us… thank you.

BareBones Combatives is coming to Switzerland.

This September I’ll be teaching a 2-day Internal & External Weekend in Aarau, Switzerland.

Day 1 – BareBones Internal
This is about the person behind the skill.
We’ll explore the 5 Pillars, maps, models and principles that help you better understand your body, mind, emotions and behaviour under pressure.

Day 2 – BareBones External
This is about simple, functional skills under pressure.
Movement, striking, defence, manhandling and pressure drills, all built around the same principles.

You can do one day or both.

Day 1 gives you the internal map.
Day 2 gives you the external tools.
Together, they connect the whole thing.

This weekend is for martial artists, self-defence instructors, coaches, security professionals, and anyone interested in practical self-protection and personal development.

BareBones is not about becoming more aggressive.
It’s about becoming more capable, more aware, and more adaptable.

19th & 20th September 2026
Aarau, Switzerland

Day 38

The funniest one yet : )

Huge thanks to the guys at Krav Maga Australia for donating and allowing me to teach my version of stuff! Also thanks for helping me in my 250 strikes for the day.

$305 short of my personal target but there’s still 4 days to go so let’s see.

Every month, 64 kids are diagnosed with cancer. For 40 years, Camp Quality has improved the quality of life for kids impacted by cancer and their families. Their programs help families build optimism and resilience through community, education and fun.

Please support me by donating to my page and help give kids facing cancer the chance to be kids again: https://fundraise.campquality.org.au/fundraisers/jimarmstrong

The 5 Pillars aren’t just things we train.

They’re how we diagnose what’s really happening.

When someone is struggling with a movement, a strike, a defence, a decision, or even their response under pressure, we don’t say, “try harder.”
That usually just adds more tension, more effort, and more noise.

Instead, we look through the 5 Pillars:
Balance - are they centred, stable, and able to move without fighting themselves?
Structure - are they using alignment and connection, or just muscling their way through?
Breath - are they regulating themselves, or holding tension and feeding stress?
Intent - do they have a clear destination, or are they just reacting with intensity?
Connect - are they moving from their centre, or are they just creating tension within themselves?

These pillars give us a simple way to spot the real problem beneath the obvious one.

Because often the issue isn’t the technique.
It’s not the punch.
It’s not the kick.
It’s not the defence.
It’s not the drill.

It’s the balance behind it.
The structure supporting it.
The breath regulating it.
The intent driving it.
The centre connecting it.

That’s why we use the 5 Pillars as a diagnostic tool across everything we teach - kickboxing, self-defence, combatives, movement, mindset, and pressure work.

Train the pillars and the techniques get better.

But more importantly, the person gets better.

Try less. Do more.

Day 14 of 42

That’s 3,500 strikes done so far and another step forward in raising money for Camp Quality.

Every day I’m putting in 250 strikes: punches, kicks, knees, elbows, weapon strikes and whatever else I can throw at the challenge to help support kids and families facing cancer.

The physical side is easy compared to what many of these kids and their families deal with every single day. If a few minutes of effort from me can help make life a little brighter for someone going through that journey, then it’s worth every strike.

If you’d like to sponsor me, donate, or simply help spread the word, I’d be incredibly grateful.

Thank you to everyone who has already donated, shared, encouraged, or joined in. Every little bit helps.

42 days.
250 strikes a day.
One good cause.

Let’s keep going. 👊
