It was a 'cracking' evening as Kraken 42S and her Rolex Sydney Hobart 80th crew came together for our very first sail as a team — the Bellerive Yacht Club's Isle of Caves overnight race, kicking off at 18:30.
The breeze was spot on at the start. Kraken stretched her legs early, charging off the line cleanly and holding the lead until about half way down the river.
As we worked our way down the eastern side of Bruny, the wind built right on cue. By the time we reached the virtual mark, things were getting lively. A fairly tidy gybe around the VM, the S4 went up with a reef in the main, and off we went — Kraken absolutely sending across Storm Bay. We saw gusts nudging 41 knots and boat speeds touching 22 knots with a decent sea. As always Kraken took all this in her stride.
Rounding the Isle of Caves brought a few shifty puffs as the breeze bounced around the headlands, then we had the familiar early-morning Derwent River lottery. The crew dug deep, keeping Kraken moving through the light spots and carparks.
By dawn’s light (just prior to 5am), we crossed second over the line — and took first in all divisions on corrected time.
Couldn’t have asked for a better start with this crew — or a better boat. Big thanks to Ambition and Tenacity for the great racing, and hats off to the mighty Kraken, her crew, and Macca for a night to remember.
Thanks to Bellerive Yacht Club, Derwent Sailing Squadron and Doyle Sails Tasmania for all your support!

This weekend is shaping up to be an absolute Kraker!
We’ve got a new team of sailors onboard and rearing to go, some familiar faces, a bunch of new faces and even a special interstate returning crew member, along with Kraken veteran Sam Bucco at the helm.
Wishing all the teams the best of luck! See you Saturday!

Fueled by ‘Activity Beers’, racing withdrawals, and the enthusiasm of some new faces onboard, the Krakens set out for the last of the season’s offshore races, the 96th Bruny Island Race.
It was slow going off the line, but we managed to get ahead of the pack, and keep the masses at bay. The big boys however, quickly established their expected 1st and 2nd positions, and it fast became a race for 3rd.
After a very frustrating meander down the Derwent, we eventually found breeze as we reached Bruny, and by the Friars we crew were cheersing some of Deep South Brewing Co.‘s finest happily under kite.
We rounded Bruny Lighthouse without incident, and started to make our way home, doing everything we could to keep the File Pro crew and KD4 at bay.
As the sunset, the forecast ‘cruising conditions’ were sneaking into the channel and we luckily managed to skate around them, meaning we were able to get back into the Derwent and on the home strait before it completely glassed out.
Of course the Derwent being the Derwent, we were forced to take a pit stop under the Taroona cliffs, but luckily a sneaky little Nth Easter found us and carried us home and over the line in the wee hours.
All in all we managed a very respectable 2nd in ORCAP (behind Alive) and 3rd in IRC and PHS (both behind Alive and Stefan).
Well done to the team, it’s been a pretty damn fun and rewarding 2023 off-shore series.
