The 2026 European Championships drew to a close yesterday in Kaštela, Croatia. With winds blowing from the mountains it was another day of unsettled conditions, making the last 3 races very challenging and a high-scoring event.
The 328 sailors were thrilled to be back racing normal Championship races with 50 minute target times, especially in such challenging conditions. They were also very happy to have all their races counting towards their overall scores after 1 discard.
The main event is the European Championship, for European 🇪🇺sailors. There is also an Open European Trophy to attract top sailors from around the world🌏. The GBR sailors are therefore competing in both.
The event Organising Authority were able to demonstrate it is possible to give live coverage from the water, to post high quality videos minutes after the action took place and share great photos for all to enjoy. EurILCA are certainly showing how good sailing events at this level can be covered for the supporters.🤩

European Championships at Kaštela, Croatia.
Day 3 and great breezes once again and good 50 minute target-time races. Had it not been for a thunderstorm⚡️⚡️⚡️that went across the course, it would have been another full schedule of races today, sadly that was not to be…..
The GBR ILCA sailors continue to do well and the final series of racing with the best all together in the Gold Fleets starts tomorrow.
The excellent media coverage by continued today, with HD videos coming off the water throughout the day, great photos for all to enjoy on the event website and appropriate media releases of the day. The EurILCA team really are showing once again how it can be done.

2026 European Championships at Kaštela in Croatia.
After a disappointing Day 1 with no races, the weather for Day 2 put on a fabulous show.
The sailors enjoyed being back racing to the traditional format with the results from every race scoring in their Gross Overall Standings and target race time of 50 minutes. The followers were also able to enjoy the high quality media EurILCA proved, with multiple live updates from the race course throughout the day.
Three races were completed by all the fleets and the GBR ILCA sailors made a good start to the event and are looking forward to the days ahead.
Great work !

There continues to be a disconnect between the administrators of our sport and the sailors. Olympic Champion is not the first person to raise his concerns about the direction the sport is taking on this Olympic cycle. The comments added to this post by many of the competitors sends another powerful message….
Are the people that made the changes listening….?

SGS #2 French Olympic Week closed today with a great breeze for the two Final Series races.
Micky Beckett🥈 and Elliot Hanson🥉kept their places on the podium after some great racing against one another.

SGS #2 French Olympic Week Day 5
After a wait for the thermal breeze to kick in, the ILCA7s had 2 more races to make it 7 in total for the 3-day Qualification/Elimination Series. These scores (after 1 discard) also have 1 score added from the Preliminary 2-day Series, to give Overall positions for those moving into the Final Series today. Confused…? Try reading the SIs setting this format!
There will be two GBR sailors competing in the Finals; Micky Beckett🥈and Elliot Hanson🥉, who continue their impressive hold on the podium.
There seems to have been no live coverage of the ILCA7s, there are no videos, nor photos from yesterday’s ILCA7 races. The best photo from yesterday is of the ILCA6 sailors training in Kaštela, Croatia ahead of the EurILCA European Championships!

SGS #2 the French Olympic Week at Hyères…
Day 3 saw the races from the first two days crushed into one score, with the two races today added to that score. So no discards apply yet, even though 7 races have been sailed in the ILCA6 and 6 races in the ILCA7.
Elliot Hanson🥈and Micky Beckett🥉are the top GBR ILCA7, punching in some great results. There are no GBR ILCA6 sailors competing.

Whilst the sailors are mature enough to accept the format and get on with it, across the fleets there continues to be frustration linked to the trial format. The initial series of races not being fully scored, but reduced into 1 “trivial” score. This is the second event where this unpopular format is being trialled. Will the administrators listen to the sailors and return the outcome of regattas to a full series of races across a period of time, enabling consistency across a broad range of conditions to produce the winner…..?
The only justification for change is an attempt to make the events more appealing to spectators. With no live coverage and no way of seeing the racing from afloat, who is the audience this is for?

SGS #2 the French Olympic Week in Hyères, Day 1.
A great start for Micky and Elliot in the ILCA7.
Once again, similar to Palma, it’s another trial format being used, where the first series of races count for so little. There’s a lot more racing to come….
