It’s been a few years since we’ve given our feet & ankles some dedicated attention here at Natural Balance Yoga. As the foundation of our physical body, they play a vital role in how we move through the world.
My yoga teacher training tutor used to call them our “understandings” - helping us to "stand strong", "stand up for ourselves" and "stand on our own two feet". So many empowering expressions!
This month, we’ll be exploring our feet & ankles in more detail, developing greater interoceptive awareness, building strength in the supporting musculature, and improving mobility.

Have you ever wondered if you're breathing "the right way"? It's something I often hear from new participants after a session.
Our breath is as unique as we are, shaped by our bodies, experiences, and lives. So maybe there is no one right way to breathe?
This month, we'll explore the many ways we can work with the breath and discover how intricately connected it is to movement.

Breaking my wrist earlier this year led me to taking a deep dive into how yoga could support it's rehabilitation. I discovered so much about improving the health and function of our wrists & elbows. I also learned how some common yoga poses can place unnecessary strain on these joints if they're not approached with care.
This July, we'll explore practices to improve mobility (without exploiting hypermobility), build strength & stability, and support healthy, happy wrists.
Whether you're experiencing discomfort or simply want to look after your wrists, I'd love you to join us ☺️

The brain is an extraordinarily complex organ, serving as the body's central command centre and influencing everything we do, think, and feel. Yoga engages many different areas of the brain; for example, balance poses challenge the cerebellum. Most interestingly, research suggests that yoga may help protect against the cognitive decline often associated with ageing by improving neuroplasticity - the brain's remarkable ability to reorganise itself and form new neural pathways.
Join us this month to move, balance, and give your brain the opportunity to build some new neural connections!🧘

There are many ways in which yoga supports the health of the lungs. For instance, practising yoga postures helps build strength and flexibility in the muscles surrounding the lungs. When these poses are combined with mindful breathing, they also engage and strengthen the entire respiratory system. Then there are the nervous system benefits of pranayama, the traditional yogic practice of breath control: slow, deep breathing can increase the relaxation response, as well as improve heart rate variability.
Join us this month as we support the healthy function of our lungs 🧘‍♀️

The knees are remarkable joints that allow us to walk, run and stay active. They also play a key role in adjusting how we perform tasks - like lifting heavy objects - to prevent strain in areas such as the back or hamstrings. However, the knees don’t work alone; how well they function depends on their relationship with the feet, hips, pelvis, and lower back.
Unfortunately, knee pain is a common issue for many people. This April, we’ll be focusing on all things related to knee health and exploring ways to better support these essential joints. Come along - your knees will appreciate it! 💕

One of the many things I love about yoga is actually what sets it apart from most forms of exercise. While it certainly benefits the physical body - promoting flexibility, supporting joint stability, and improving muscle tone - the real transformation happens when we learn to regulate the nervous system and cultivate a deeper sense of calm.
These days, we are constantly inundated with concerns, both global and personal, that can leave us feeling unsettled, or worse. Over the coming month, we will explore a variety of somatic practices designed to help ease stress and reduce anxiety.

Throughout February, our focus is on the sacrum and sacroiliac joints. This area plays an important role in stabilising the pelvis while still allowing enough movement for everyday actions like balance. For a variety of reasons, it can also be a common source of discomfort. This month we’ll explore ways to support sacral stability without exploiting the mobility of the joint.

Ever feel tired of the pressure to make New Year’s resolutions? That feeling of setting goals only to fall short can make you wonder "what's the point?" A new calendar year doesn’t magically change our lives, but it can offer a useful pause to reflect. So how do we make resolutions that actually feel supportive?
For the next few weeks, we’ll be exploring simple ways to weave more mindful movement and yoga into your daily routine. And as a little January gift for new students, your first session is on me 🧘‍♀️
