Did you know that Basketball was invented at the Y, in an 1891 in Massachusetts??
Neither did I, I'd never thought about it, so I googled it to check & it's true!
So, I may not be into Basketball or know any of its history or anything at all about it....but I am proud to say, that I have been proudly teaching Yoga at the Y for around 4 years now.
This week, I had to undertake an online Induction, which stepped us through the history of the Y.
I learnt that:
💙 The Y was first founded in 1844 in London, England
💙 It began with just 12 young Christian men
💙The Y is now in 120 countries throughout the world
💙It is not just a gym, they also offer more widespread support within the community such as Kids breakfast clubs, Holiday programs, Camps, Op shops, Health care programs
💙Their core values are: Caring, Honesty Respect and Responsibility
💙Today, they operate with a more inclusive approach - all is welcome
💙Y - West Jamboree Heights opened in 1979. I won't forget that, it was the year I was born!
I feel so proud to be a small part of their history. I'd honestly never thought too much of it, other than noticing a few photos and a plaque on the wall as I'd come in each week.
One thing I love about the Y, is that it is a community space.
Over the past few weeks, when I have been assisting another teacher with her classes, a completely different class (Mat Pilates) to my normal Sunday Yoga, when the centre is quiet and just ours.
Instead, I have been in on a busy Saturday morning, sharing the space with gymnastics and many other gym go'ers. I have had to work out how to use equipment such as the microphone, find the Fit balls etc...
Not for one moment, did I feel left alone. Yes, they missed their original teacher - she has been there for 26 years!!! but all of the members stepped in & assisted me, nothing was too much trouble.
So, I am grateful to be a small part of the history and continue to uphold their community spirit. It might be a small, humble space, but that's all we need. It's how the space is filled, with community, friendships, support, wellness, laughs and so much more.
Always grateful to be teaching at the Y.
