lakes and dams as a significant inland drowning location.
Why lakes are dangerous:
π§ Lakes can look calm β hidden drop-offs and deep water can catch people by surprise
π§ Cold water β sudden cold can cause panic and make swimming difficult
π§ Hidden hazards β rocks, logs, weeds and muddy bottoms are often hard to see
π§ No lifeguards β most lakes are unpatrolled, so help may not be nearby
π§ Weather can change quickly β wind and waves can make it difficult to get back to shore
How to stay safe:
β Always swim with a friend, never alone
β Wear a lifejacket when boating, kayaking or paddleboarding
β Enter the water feet first and avoid diving
β Stay close to shore and only swim in safe, known areas
β Always supervise children within arm's reach
Lakes may look peaceful, but hidden hazards, cold water and deep drop-offs can make them dangerous. Respect the water and always swim safely. π

Where should my child be with their floating skills by 12 years of age?
By the age of 12, children should be able to confidently float and maintain buoyancy in a variety of situations. Floating is a vital life-saving skill and provides valuable time to rest, recover, signal for help, or plan the safest way back to safety.
They should be able to:
π Float confidently on their front and back
π Maintain a survival float for an extended period of time
π Change between different floating positions with control
β±οΈ Use floating to conserve energy while waiting for help or preparing to swim to safety
Floating is one of the most important water safety skills a child can learn. Every child should know that if they get into trouble in the water, Float. Breathe. Stay Calm.

π Why Learn to Swim? Asthma π
Did you know swimming is often recommended as a great form of exercise for people with asthma? π«πββοΈ
Swimming in a warm, indoor pool can help because:
π§ Warm, humid air is often gentler on the airways than cold, dry air.
π Regular swimming can improve fitness and help strengthen the heart and lungs.
π Learning breathing techniques in the water can help develop better breath control and confidence.
At AQUAKids, our heated indoor pool provides a comfortable environment where children can build water confidence, develop lifelong swimming skills, and enjoy the many health benefits of being active.
β οΈ Every child with asthma is different. If your child has asthma, speak with their doctor about the best way to participate in swimming and always follow their Asthma Action Plan.

Drowning can occur in any body of water, including spas and bathtubs, particularly for young children and vulnerable adults.
Why hot tubs are dangerous:
π§ It only takes a small amount of water β young children can drown in a spa
π§ Hot water can make you sleepy β adults can become drowsy or lose consciousness
π§ Slippery surfaces β getting in and out can lead to falls into the water
π§ Children can slip underwater β spa seats and steps can make it difficult for them to get back up
π§ Drowning is silent β there is often no splashing or calling for help
How to stay safe:
β Always supervise children within arm's reach
β Keep the spa cover locked when not in use
β Never leave children alone in a hot tub
β Limit time in hot water and get out if you feel dizzy or sleepy
β Avoid alcohol when using a hot tub
Hot tubs are for relaxing, but they can also be dangerous. Constant supervision, a locked cover, and safe habits help prevent drowning. π
