PERFECT SEMI-FINAL (Sat, Nov 29)!
I believe I just played in the perfect Pennant Semi-Final! What do I mean by “perfect”? It’s where every feature we designed & refined into the new 2025 Pennant Team Tennis format came to be, within the one Semi-Final match! ... (except for no 8 below, which unfortunately most centers can’t easily accommodate, & most matches don’t follow - but we will attempt to implement in next Saturday’s Finals).
What features?
Variety of opponent
Complexity of challenges
Excitement & tension
Multiple stories to tell
Opportunities to reset, & stage comebacks
A cumulative team points system, that can come down to just one set, or just one game, or in fact just one point
A true team-building, & character-building format
(But, in this case, NOT finishing with the Doubles rubber to have the whole team on court for the climax of the day)
So, what happened today (Sat Nov 29)?
We had the 1st placed team, (“Because We Can” = BWC), up against 4th placed team (GCA Titans = GCAT), who only just scraped into 4th place, via a last round maximum win. GCAT were the massive underdogs.
BWC won the first set of Doubles 6-4, after a very tightly-fought 1 hour set. GCAT reset, but faced a 7-8 scoreline, only to reel off the last 3 points as BWC felt the pressure & cracked. GCAT quickly established a substantial lead in the 3rd doubles 10-point TB (8-4), & managed to hold on to win it 10-6.
This set up a scenario where BWC needed to win 3 of the 4 singles rubbers which, on paper, was a distinct possibility.
The surprise came when GCAT No 2 player beat the out-of-form BWC No 1 player 6-1. BWC No 2 then beat GCAT No 1 player 6-2 (not such a surprise).
Then another amazing story unfolded. BWC’s No 1 found himself down 1-5, against GCAT no 1, & continuing to struggle with his confidence, & multiple double-faults & unforced errors. So, his Captain suggested a change of tactics (get to the net at every opportunity). This ignited a comeback of epic proportions, where 20 minutes & 2 saved set points later, (… & therefore 2 Semi-Final points later), he found himself to have won 6 games in a row to finish up 7-5!
This set up a tense 2 v 2 clash, where the set winner ensures their team the Semi-Final win! Fortunes fluctuated (BWC had points for 4-1, but didn’t convert), with both players gaining the upper hand, but it was the underdog who prevailed, with a tight 6-4 set win (meaning GCAT No 1 lost both his singles, but their No 2 WON both his)!
So, how tight was the result? Well, GCAT lead by 1 set, while BWC lead by 1 game. GCAT won the Semi-Final, against the odds, due to a format that allows for upsets, resets, tight score-lines, team tactics, & inspired comebacks.
There were multiple sub-plots, including broken ankles, foot injury (glass), shoulder injury, youth vs experience, dodgy line calls, over-excited spectators, etc, etc.
A great day was had by all, thanks mainly to a format that allows for, & even encourages, all these scenarios to play out.
GCAT gets to play a Final from 4th position, & BWC has to be satisfied with their 4th consecutive Minor Premiership.
See you all at Queens Park TC for next Saturday’s Season 3 Finals Day (commencing at 12:30pm)! 😃🎾

NOTE: Anyone that doesn’t realise how closely tennis reflects various aspects of our lives, & offers opportunities for personal growth, & character-building, hasn’t yet played enough tennis to understand. TGC’s Team Tennis formats are designed specifically to encourage young players to experience this learning & understanding process, in a true team environment (instead of the more isolating & individualistic experience of tournaments).

PS. I am aware that there was a similarly close Semi-Final in Pennant 2! That one was slightly different, with the underdogs winning 3 singles & 1 doubles rubbers (up 4-3 in sets, & down 21-23 in games). 😃
