In Chen Style Taichi, power is not created by force. It develops through relaxation, connection, and continuous movement.

Softness is cultivated first. As it accumulates, it transforms into strength. 積柔成剛:The final punch is not an isolated action, but the natural expression of the movement that came before.

Firm within, gentle without.

Each movement is a character; connection is what turns characters into calligraphy.

Although Xie Xing appears simple, it requires careful coordination of stepping, body alignment, and direction. As in many aspects of Taijiquan, the challenge lies not in the individual parts, but in bringing them together as one.

Firm within, gentle without.

Meaning of Jin Gang Dao Dui
-- Simon Leung

Jin Gang Dao Dui (金剛搗碓) is the most iconic movements in Chen Style Tai Chi, appearing as both the opening and closing moves in all Chen Style forms.

The term “Jin Gang” (金剛) comes from the Sanskrit word Vajra, which may refer to thunderbolt, lightning, or diamond, symbolizing indestructibility, strength, and unwavering power.

“Dao” (搗) means to pound or strike downward, while “Dui” (碓) refers to an ancient stone mortar used for pounding grain or rice.

Together, Jin Gang Dao Dui evokes the image of a Vajra force striking downward with grounded power and stability, reflecting the Chen Style Tai Chi principles of sinking and whole-body power integration.

Honoured to participate in this Overseas Taijiquan Promotion Ambassador event.

The organisers thoughtfully added English subtitles to make the video more accessible internationally.

Of course, some traditional concepts are difficult to translate perfectly from Chinese into English — but that is also part of the beauty of cultural exchange.

A small training space, but a focused and dedicated class.

Even as beginners, the students practise with concentration and sincerity — step by step building coordination, structure, and understanding together.

Progress begins with attention.

Final class of our first beginner course in 2006 at Tzu Chi Brisbane.

In a relatively short time, the students have already begun to move with greater coordination and connection.

Clear guidance and consistent practice make all the difference.
