The PNG Chiefs are pleased to confirm the signing of Australian rugby league international Zac Lomax, who becomes signing #005 for the club's inaugural NRL season in 2028.

Lomax will join the Chiefs at the conclusion of his current rugby union contract with the Western Force, bringing with him an outstanding resume built across the NRL and representative football.

A Temora Dragons junior, Lomax represented the Australian Schoolboys and NSW junior representative teams before making his NRL debut with the St George Illawarra Dragons in 2018. Across 114 appearances for the Dragons, he scored 49 tries and kicked 315 goals.

After being named in the 2024 Dally M Team of the Year, Lomax joined the Parramatta Eels in 2025, where he continued to impress, scoring nine tries in 19 games.

At representative level, the 26-year-old has made six State of Origin appearances for New South Wales, scoring six tries and helping the Blues secure a series victory. He has also represented the Kangaroos at the 2024 Pacific Championships.

Lomax joins Jarome Luai, Alex Johnston, Connor Watson and Matty Lees as confirmed signings for the PNG Chiefs, further demonstrating the club's commitment to building a world-class roster ahead of its historic entry into the NRL.

PNG Chiefs CEO Lorna McPherson said the signing reflects the club's ambition to bring sustained success to Papua New Guinea.

"We're delighted to sign a player with Zac's talent to our squad ahead of what will be a momentous season for rugby league. As a club, we are completely focused on building a team that demonstrates how committed we are to bringing success to Papua New Guinea."

Former Roosters star Joey Manu has been photographed with PNG Chief's boss of football, Michael Chammas.

The rugby union convert is believed to be the club's next high-profile target as he tours the incoming franchise's facilities in Port Moresby.

They already landed Jarome Luai’s signature and now the PNG Chiefs are set to make their next biggest play on the transfer market.

Joey Manu was spotted meeting with PNG boss Michael Chammas at Sydney International Airport as the Chiefs look to lure the former NRL superstar back to rugby league.

Manu is currently playing French rugby, but his contract at Racing 92 ends right when the Chiefs are set to the enter the NRL for their inaugural season in 2028.

In fact, Manu’s contract wraps up in May of 2027, which means he could even look to join a rival NRL team mid-season before linking up with the Chiefs the following year.

PNG CHIEFS ANNOUNCE DEVELOPMENT DEALS FOR RISING PNG TALENT

PNG Chiefs have continued to build for the future with the announcement of Papua New Guinea talents Gairo Voro, Morea Morea and Finley Glare as the club's inaugural development players ahead of its entry to the NRL in 2028.

The trio – all currently playing for London Broncos – become the first PNG-born players to officially join the Chiefs' squad for its inaugural season.

Voro, Morea and Glare have all signed two-year development contracts, also becoming the first players signed to the club's development pathway – an important milestone as the Chiefs continue their commitment to create a strong pathway for Papua New Guinea talent.

PNG Chiefs CEO Lorna McPherson said the signings were a significant step in the development of local rugby league talent in the region.

"Today is an important day for the Chiefs as we highlight the opportunities that this rugby league team will create for Papua New Guinea."

Voro, 23, is an international five-eighth who progressed through the PNG system, making his PNG Hunters debut in 2024 before going on to represent the Kumuls at Test level in 2025. He has scored 18 tries in 20 games for London Broncos through 2026.

THE Papua New Guinea Chiefs and Hunters are talking, well at least holding preliminary discussions about defining and creating a solid player pathway leading towards the nation’s historic entry into the NRL in 2028.

Both the SP PNG Hunters chief executive officer Scott Barker and PNG Chiefs general manager football Michael Chammas confirmed these introductory engagements this week.

Hunters’ Barker said talks between these organisations have been ongoing for the past 12 months, with both parties exploring how the Hunters can play a key role in developing future Chiefs players.

Adrian Lam does not believe Papua New Guinea Chiefs’ pursuit of Edwin Ipape is over, despite ruling themselves out making a move.

A PNG icon, Ipape has naturally been linked with a move to the Chiefs heading into 2028 before their introduction to the NRL.

However, Ipape signed a new contract with the Leopards last year until the end of 2031, and crucially, Leigh said it did not include an NRL release clause.

PNG officials were in the UK last month, with General Manager Michael Chammas confirming they would not be pursuing Ipape due to his contract arrangements.

Lam was asked about those comments in his pre-match conference, but admitted he did not think that story was done with.

“It’s a little bit of foresight,” Lam said when asked about Ipape’s deal.

“I think I’ve mentioned in the past that I don’t think that one is over just yet so we’ll wait and see.”

Pushed further on that, Ipape said: “I’ll let you work that out, I’m not going to comment too much on that but he’s a big personality in the country.

“He’s massive for us, it seems like he’s contracted here until he’s 45-years-old, I hope that’s the case that he will be anyway but I just think that, we’ll wait and see what happens.”

THE Papua New Guinea Chiefs have secured the right man to lead the club into its historic NRL debut, according to international coaching great Tony Smith.

“Willie is a very good coach,” Smith told The National. “He took over from me at Hull KR and he’s done a great job. He’s a fantastic young coach.”

Smith has thrown his full support behind the appointment of Willie Peters as the inaugural head coach of the Chiefs, while also dismissing concerns about safety in Port Moresby following his first visit to Papua New Guinea over the weekend.

Peters succeeded Smith at Hull Kingston Rovers in the English Super League and has since earned widespread praise for transforming the club into one of the competition’s strongest teams. Smith revealed that Peters has been eager to learn more about Papua New Guinea ahead of his move and has already sought advice from him during his visit.

“I know he’s excited about coming here,” Smith said. “He’s asked me to report back on my thoughts while I’m here, which was nice. I’d certainly help him in any way I can.”

Smith, one of rugby league’s most respected coaches, said everything he has seen during his stay has reinforced why Peters is looking forward to taking up the challenge.

“With what I’ve seen here and what rugby league means to the people and the country, I can understand why he wants to come,” Smith said. “I can see the appeal of players wanting to come here to play and I can understand why.”

The former England and Great Britain coach also addressed ongoing discussions about safety concerns in Papua New Guinea, saying his personal experience has been completely different from what some people may believe.

“Not my experience at all,” Smith said. “I walked around the harbour in the morning saying good morning to everybody. People were just so welcoming and nice. I haven’t seen any reason to have safety concerns.”
