Florence Thum - Psychotherapist "The moment your fear transfigures, you come into rhythm with your own self."
~ John O'Donohue

Take your first step towards growth and healing.

My integrative practice is client-centred, drawing on value- and strength-based approaches. As a certified trauma practitioner, my approach is to empower you to move from “what is going wrong” to “what can be”. I believe, as you are here, that you are ready to attend to the vital things in your life which bring you aliveness. I hold postgraduate degrees in psychotherapy, education and law, and have worked in different professional industries. I work with people from diverse gender, ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in areas of
• personal growth and development
• communication and conflict
• stress and anxiety
• interpersonal relationships
• education and schooling
• mid-life questioning
• existential or spiritual issues
• grief and loss. Together in a therapeutic or coaching space, our session is a safe space for awareness and to lean towards positive action. Take your first step toward change, now. I am here to support, facilitate and guide.

"Time is a river which sweeps me along, but I am the river; it is a tiger which destroys me, but I am the tiger; it is a fire which consumes me, but I am the fire.” ~ Jorge Luis Borges

When you take the time to draw on your listening-imagination, you will begin to hear this gentle voice at the heart of your life. It is deeper and surer than all the other voices of disappointment, unease, self-criticism and bleakness. All holiness is about learning to hear the voice of your own soul. It is always there and the more deeply you learn to listen, the greater surprises and discoveries that will unfold. To enter into the gentleness of your own soul changes the tone and quality of your life. Your life is no longer consumed by hunger for the next event, experience or achievement. You learn to come down from the treadmill and walk on the earth. You gain a new respect for yourself and others and you learn to see how wonderfully precious this one life is. You begin to see through the enchanting veils of illusion that you had taken for reality. You no longer squander yourself on things and situations that deplete your essence. You know now that your true source is not outside you. Your soul is your true source and a new energy and passion awakens in you.

A reflective practice for this week:
Choose one ordinary object or place in your home - a table, cup, chair, doorway, window, bowl, or blanket.
Ask yourself: What memories live here? What does this object know about me? What has it held?
You might write for five minutes without trying to make it beautiful.

So much of our emotional life is formed in ordinary settings. Around tables. In kitchens. In cars. In bedrooms. In doorways. In the moments before someone leaves or after someone comes home.

What is the meaning held in the everyday. What was spoken? What was avoided? What did we learn about love, safety, conflict, apology, or need? The ordinary is often where the deepest stories live.

What ordinary place holds a lot of your story?

This week’s poem - Perhaps the World Ends Here by Joy Harjo - is a poem about the kitchen table, but also about memory, family, grief, nourishment, conflict, story, and return.

I love how it honours the ordinary places where life actually happens. Therapy often brings us back to these places too - the table, the body, the family story, the unsaid thing, the meal, the silence, the longing to be met.
