The Magic you might be Missing: Yin Yoga✨ (newsletter summary edition)
Yin Yoga shows positive effects on mental health and wellbeing, including anxiety, depression, stress and worry. Yin Yoga creates favourable conditions for the relaxation response, including a decrease in heart rate, respiratory rate, reduced blood pressure and an increase in brain alpha waves. The relaxation response is more than simply feeling relaxed, it is an active response to modifying the sympathetic nervous system’s interpretation of stressful stimuli.
On a physical level, Yin Yoga improves our range of motion through our tissue and joints and lowers inflammation in our body. You might have heard of of the word fasica before, its often used synonmously with Yin Yoga. Once upon a time, fascia was believed to be simply a ‘yin tissue’, a sheath surrounding our muscles, bones, joints, and ligaments, but actually, fasica is everywhere in our bodies, an adaptive network, connecting everything. Made up of collagen, elastin, nerve cells, water and ground substance, fascia is literally what holds us together. It is an extensive network that not only holds all of our, muscles, systems, organs and cells in place, but also relays messages between the cells, just like the mycelial network underground. Fascia is, in fact, our richest sensory organ in the body. While fascia is not only a yin tissue, it works with 8 of the 12 different fascial movement qualities; and that’s quite a lot.
Fascia reminds us of the interconnectivity of everything and everyone, it reminds us of the power of the subtle and that we are made up of magic.
