🐟 This months Fish of the Month is FLATHEAD!

Our members are encouraged to target this species between the last club meeting and the next. We also have our Flathead Comp & BBQ event in September.

What's your favourite fly for this fish?

And we now have a Fish of the Every Month - the elusive MULLET! We all want to catch one of these on fly so it's a constant goal! We now have a perpetual trophy for mullet on fly fishos too!

From our Club Captain:

2026 Sunny Coast Fly Fishers Bream Comp

We all enjoyed the sunshine and light winds out on the Mooloolah river, Sunshine Coast today for the 2026 Sunny Coast Fly Fishers Bream Comp.

A great social event but also a good chance for us to win some great prizes. Thanks to our sponsors, including our own member George Drew with Third Child Wines.

And the winner goes to Clint Bauer with a nice 30cm bream. Well done Clint!!

We also had some notable non bream catches with John Robertson landing a nice flathead.

Thanks all. I think it’s fair to say that all enjoyed the event so we will look to run the event again in 2027!

🎣 Behind the Fly – Meet Herm

Every fly fisher has a story… and our newest member Herm has been collecting them since 1966.

Growing up on the Hopkins River near Warrnambool, there was only one rule: be home by 6pm for tea. The rest of the time was spent exploring the river. His fly fishing journey began with an old Martin fly reel, a heavy Jarvis Walker bream rod, and a single Mrs Simpson fly. Somehow, on that very first attempt, he landed a 2lb brown trout… and he's been hooked ever since.

πŸ† Favourite setup?
A 9' Douglas 7wt, which has become his go-to rod for chasing Sunshine Coast saltwater species.

πŸ˜‚ Most memorable moment?
After hooking a big sea-run brown trout on Victoria's Merri River, the line wrapped around a huge boulder. Rather than give up, Herm stripped off, jumped into the river with his rod in one hand, swam across, freed the line… and landed a 5+ pound trout!

πŸ“š Fly fishing inspiration?
Legendary Australian writer John Turnbull, whose articles made readers feel like they were standing beside him on the river. These days, Tom Jarman is another angler Herm enjoys following.

🎯 Still learning?
Even after almost 60 years, Herm says he still wants to improve his saltwater fly fishing, particularly choosing the right fly and refining techniques in different situations.

❀️ Best thing about fly fishing?
Passing it on. Herm introduced his son to fly fishing, teaching him that some of the best days on the water aren't measured by the number of fish you catch.

πŸ’¬ Advice for anyone thinking about joining our club?
"Was involved in a fishing club with Dad... good memories and fun."

Welcome to the club, Herm! We look forward to sharing plenty of time on the water with you and hearing more stories from nearly six decades of fly fishing experience.

πŸ‘‡ Say g'day to Herm in the comments! 🎣
