It is with great sadness we hear of the passing of Anastasia Hatzoglou.

Below is a message from the Hatzoglou family.

Celebrating the Life of Anastasia (Anna or Tasia) Hatzoglou | 1938 – 2026

Mum passed away on Sunday evening, 26 July 2026, after a courageous battle with a condition that gradually took away her ability to speak, eat and drink. Throughout her final days, she showed incredible strength and dignity.

On behalf of our family, we extend our sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at Sunshine Hospital for the compassion, care and respect they showed Mum and our family during her final journey. While today is filled with sadness, it is also a day of gratitude. We were blessed to have Mum in our lives for 88 remarkable years - a life defined by courage, sacrifice, love and an unwavering devotion to her family.

Mum was born in 1938 in the village of Vathillakos, Kozani, Greece, to Christos and Sofia Konstantinidis. She was the third of four children, growing up with Evanthea, Kostas and Vasili. Life in rural Greece was not easy, but it shaped the values that guided her entire life - faith, humility, resilience, respect and the importance of family.

In 1962, Mum made the brave decision to migrate to Australia to join her brother and sister. She arrived with a wooden chest full of her belongings, hope in her heart and a determination to build a better future. Australia became her home, but Greece always remained a part of her.

In 1964, she married Panagiotis Hatzoglou, and together they shared 55 years of marriage built on love, trust, sacrifice and commitment. They raised three children - Nick, Mary and Chris - and dedicated their lives to creating opportunities for their family.

Mum and Dad worked tirelessly. Dad was a tailor and Mum worked alongside him, often working long hours and multiple jobs to build a secure home for their children. Their homes in West Sunshine became places filled with family, hard work, laughter and love.

Mum was a woman of incredible work ethic. She worked at Smorgans Canned Fruit and Conner Shea Farm Machinery, forming lifelong friendships along the way. Later, she joined her brother Kostas and sister-in-law Argiro in running a milk bar, where she became a familiar and loved face in the community.

Her greatest joy came from her family. She warmly welcomed Tony, Suzan and Irene, and later embraced her nine grandchildren - Louis, Oliver, Mia, Peter, Max, Leo, Alexander, Anastasia and Peter. They were the centre of her world. She cooked for them, hugged them, celebrated them and made each one feel uniquely loved.

Beyond her family, Mum was loved by many through the church, the Greek Senior Citizens Club and the local community. She was quick-witted and strong-minded, loved a good debate and was never afraid to stand her ground.
But above all, Mum loved. She loved deeply, generously and unconditionally.

Her legacy is not measured by what she owned, but by what she gave - her strength, her kindness, her example and, most importantly, her love for family.

Mum, thank you for every sacrifice, every meal, every hug and every memory.

We will miss your cooking, your laughter, your hugs and gathering around your table.
Although our hearts are broken, they are also full - full of memories, gratitude and love.

Rest peacefully now, Mum, reunited with Dad.
Your love lives on through all of us, and your memory will remain in our hearts forever.

Αιωνία η μνήμη σου.
May your memory be eternal.

We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of past player Kerry Matthews

Kerry Matthews grew up in Bega, New South Wales, where his adventurous spirit first began to shine. As a young man, he left his family home and rode his motorbike all the way to the Northern Territory, chasing opportunity and embracing life with courage and determination. There, he worked in the mines, building a life through hard work and resilience.

During this chapter of his life, Kerry met his second wife and became a devoted father to four children. Family was always important to him, and he carried a strong sense of loyalty and love throughout his life.

Kerry was a passionate sportsman and gave his heart to every club and team he was part of. He proudly played cricket for Bankstown Cricket Club, Sunshine Heights Cricket Club, and rugby for Footscray Rugby Club. He was a dedicated supporter of the North Queensland Cowboys and loved the camaraderie, mateship, and spirit that sport brought into his life. Kerry was also proudly related to well-known Australian cricketer Greg Matthews and legendary cricketer Adam Gilchrist.

Eventually, Kerry moved to Queensland, and it was there that his greatest love story began. In Queensland, Kerry met Christina, and from the moment they found each other, their connection was undeniable. Together they built a life filled with love, companionship, laughter, and unwavering devotion. For more than 20 years, they shared a deep and beautiful bond, and Christina remained the love of Kerry’s life, just as Kerry was hers.

Kerry will always be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, loyal friend, proud sportsman, and a truly great man whose warmth and strength touched the lives of many. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Kerry Matthews is survived by his loving wife, Christina Matthews, his children, extended family, and dear friends.

Vale Kerry
