“Calorie tracking is obsessive”

For most people with serious physique goals, simply “eating clean” or “eating more” isn’t enough, especially if you don’t yet have the knowledge or experience on how to reach those goals.

So before dismissing calorie tracking as obsessive, consider this:

Without data, how will you know what has or hasn’t worked when progress stalls?

How will you know what needs to change?

Or by how much?

And how will you make sure you reach your goal within a specific timeframe?

Tracking calories isn’t about obsession.

It’s about reducing trial and error and being efficient.

Because constantly second guessing, and changing things without any real data is way more obsessive than simply tracking your calories in the first place.

When you track your calories, you learn exactly what it takes to reach your goal, how long it will realistically take, and how to maintain that result long term.

Carly had been on and off with training for around six months due to having no real structure or strategy behind her goals.

This was achieved using a calorie budgeting approach - 6 lower calorie days to allow for 1 higher calorie day on the weekend to enjoy eating out, all while maintaining a 25% deficit. Struggling to stick to your diet?

If you’re new to dieting and struggling to stay consistent, it’s probably because you’re trying to eat something different every day.

People often think more variety will keep things interesting, but it usually does the opposite.

It creates decision fatigue, requires more planning, and leaves way too much room for error.

Now you’re constantly trying to figure out what to eat, guessing portions, and adjusting meals on the fly. That makes it much easier to go over your calorie target or fall off track completely.

If you struggle to build momentum, simplify everything first.

Create a realistic meal structure based on your calorie and macro targets, your preferences, and what fits your schedule.

Have your food prepared in advance and try to eat the same meals at similar times each day.

Do this consistently until you build momentum and start hitting your targets without thinking.

Then you can start adding more variety, like swapping foods with similar macros, creating different meals that still fit your targets, or leaving a small calorie buffer each day to fit something different in.

Cuong came to me after his progress had completely stalled.

He felt like his physique wasn’t improving anymore, despite doing the same things he’d always done - training the way he did in his 20s and 30s, with no real structure behind it.

So we set more clear body composition goals, established a more precise calorie deficit, cleaned up years of inefficient lifting habits, and put him on a structured, progressive plan he could actually follow.

And once the plan was clear, everything changed.

His training became more accurate, his progress became more consistent, and for the first time in a long time, he actually felt like he was moving in the right direction.

And he didn’t just go through the motions, he fully bought into the process.

No second guessing, no excuses, he just kept an open mindset to everything with a consistent effort across the board, despite having years of experience under his belt.

And the result for the first phase was 7kg down!
