The ABC of Judo…Always Be Countering!!!

In the third main section of my book I discuss counters, the importance of always looking to capitalise on your opponent’s weaknesses, the four main big counters (including Yoko Guruma as pictured), Ashi Waza counters and using transitions to the ground to counter weak drop attacks.

Tani Otoshi - the most dangerous throw allowed under the current IJF rules or actually a beautiful technique that can be used safely and effectively as part of a “twitch” style combination?

The second obviously!!

With a delicate suggestion of a hip throw and the defensive overreaction from your opponent, change the direction of your attack, extending your leg behind your opponents legs and guide them onto their back!! 🥋💪

In my upcoming book, I discuss the three different styles of combinations, including examples and practical steps for how to learn, practice and implement into your training, randori and competitions!!

On the theme of doubling up on attacks, I have a full section in my upcoming book on the importance of combinations.

I discuss the three different types of combinations, giving technical examples and practical advice on how to learn and practice combinations.

One example I discuss is the classic pairing of Ouchi Gari into Osoto Gari, which go together like apple crumble and custard!!🥋💪

Are you doubling (or tripling…or however many attacks you need to do to get the job done) up your attacks?

What’s the highest number of consecutive attacks you’ve done to finish an attacking sequence? 🥋💪

The concept for the book is a practical guide to winning.

Winning could mean competing but winning is also the personal victory of being better than you were yesterday.

Two areas of Judo that I focus my attention are combinations and counters.

Here, after the Ippon Seoi Nage is blocked, I change the direction of the attack, moving to the outside to bypass the blocking hip and throwing my partner backwards capitalising on the direction of resistance 🥋💪

Not sure what the ultimate lesson here is…obviously, never turn your back on your opponent…but if you’re going to launch a sneaky attack, make sure you don’t p**s around!!
