We did it - 3rd at worlds.

I’m not going to give a detailed recap, just express my sincere admiration for a bloke who consistently puts in the work despite having such a busy work and family life.

Huge thanks to .fitness for handling him on the day, kudos for being so proactive and allowing all three of us to be on the same page.

Huge thanks to all the coaches and members giving Chris the environment he needs to switch on.

As well as to for being such an awesome person to have on team Aus and brining the competition so we all got the best out of both of you!

Again well done Chris! I’m very proud!

Had the pleasure of coaching these boys over the weekend, all to their first comps!

Full comp recaps to come later, but a good day all round!

This is the only way I can think to make this rule objective. We all just want to see objectivity and certainty.

What a game day coach shouldn’t do ❌

- give ammonia for first attempts
- take on and outwardly express the stress of the comp
- select the attempts they wish the lifter had

What a game day coach should do ✅

- be on top of the strategy of the day
- convey a sense of cool, calm, confidence to their lifter
- be objective about attempt selections and load number they know the lifter has
- hype the lifter up when they need it!

One of my lifters was having some niggles and pains getting into the gym. They asked “Will it get better as I get stronger?”

I responded like this:

In the short run you probably won’t be as uncomfortable as you are now. Now that we are on a new program with different exercises it will take some time for your tissues to adapt.

So it will probably get better but it won’t necessarily go away, you’ll always feel a bit uncomfortable as you keep training.

But instead of the weights that you are currently using causing those pains and sensations, it will be higher loads and volumes that will make you uncomfortable. So no, you can’t get strong enough so that you don’t ever feel niggles, but that doesn’t mean that getting stronger isn’t causing your body to be more robust and resilient over time.

I think what’s key when thinking about attempt selection is to make sure that your opener and second attempt are adding to your readiness for your third, not taking away from it.

For a 3rd squat IMO you should actually aim for about 97%, grinding out a heavy squat will just have consequences later in the day come 3rd deadlifts.

Bench has a finer margin of error, if you do miss it should at least come off the chest.

You pull what you need to win, but statistically people who win comps are the ones who go 9/9. Against the second attempt shouldn’t be what you rely on or fall back on, it’s just there to set up your third attempt.

So I tuned into this podcast that no one has probably ever heard of only to hear roasting me for my thoughts on whether there is a difference between RPE and RIR.

To be clear, my position is; they are exactly the same*

*but nuance self flagellatory nuance.

There has been a bit of a move away from using E1RM of late.

I still find it very useful, it’s not going to be perfectly accurate, but it doesn’t have to be to be useful. Adding 5kgs to E1RM is still adding 5kgs, regardless if the measure is off by a couple of % points for any one individual.

From next year I’ll be taking on 1-1 personal training sessions

DM me if you know of anyone in the area that would be keen to move better and feel better!

Solid work on the last minute stand in for a photo shoot 👌🏻
