Today's Tip #5 – Celebrate Small Successes — Both Team and Individual

Instead of worrying about winning, young players need to know they are in a position where they can experience other successes.

One suggestion is to decide on an area for improvement, work out a desired performance metric to measure then track it during training. Remember to celebrate when someone hits their metric.

Kids want to be successful and have fun. But unfortunately not everyone can win. That’s why it’s very important we find other ways for players to succeed.

Here are just a few ideas:
- Celebrate finishing a tough exercise
- Celebrate meeting a new milestone
- Celebrate accurate shots on goal
- Celebrate when they learn a new skill
- Celebrate when the team strings together numerous passes.
- Celebrate when they learn an offensive set-piece
- Celebrate when the team or a player breaks a tough habit
- Celebrate when a player demonstrates supreme teamwork
- Celebrate when a player legally slide tackles an opponent.

The next question is - how do you celebrate?

Today’s Tip #4 - Recognise Improvement and Growth the Entire Season

Perhaps the best motivation of all is when young athletes can see and feel that they are constantly improving. The beginning of the season is always very productive because it’s new, fresh, and players feel like they are quickly getting better.

But as the season goes on, many times things can get stale and players feel that they are no longer improving. This makes it really tough for them to keep working hard.

Kids are motivated by progress and by growing; so offering constant feedback on their effort and performance is very important.

What are your tips about on how to recognise progress and growth in young players?

Today's Tip #3 – Explain the Reason Why

A good coach or mentor explains the “reason why”. Many times coaches need to put their sales hat on (in addition to teaching) because we need to make sure players believe.

Quite often players don’t understand why they are doing a certain exercise, and they may not truly know how the exercise is helping them.

This is why we should explain the “reason why” the fundamentals and exercises are important. Don’t assume our players know, because they don’t.

At a psychological level, it's human nature to want to know the reason why we are doing something.

Today's Tip #2 – Do NOT Run at the End of Training

This might surprise you, but for many coaches, this is standard practice!

If a coach saves conditioning for the very end of training, kids won't train at 100% throughout the session because they know what's coming at the end and they need to conserve energy.

To motivate your child to keep turning up for training - end the session on a high note so the last thing they remember is feeling happy about how they trained.

Over the next few days, I will share tips on how to motivate your child to return to pre-season training after the long Summer break.

Today's tip #1 – Recognise the Importance of Player Motivation

If you can first recognise the importance of player motivation, it will go a long way. As a parent and as a coach - devoting time to getting to know the player and what makes them tick will help tap into how to motivate them.

What's your opinion on today's tip?

Don't hang up your boots now the weather is warming up! October to March is the best time to focus on your child's individual development so they return stronger and sharper for the Winter pre-season.
