He has been a clinical advisor to the World Health Organisation on the management of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. His main interests are; device therapy in the treatment of emphysema, pleural pathology and using new technologies to treat chronic respiratory diseases. Professor Alvin Ing

Professor Alvin Ing is a Professor, Respiratory Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences, Macquarie University. He is also the Clinical Program Head, Cardiovascular and Respiratory Program at the University. He has been involved in interventional pulmonology since 1993, when he helped establish endobronchial laser resection and stent deployment at Concord Hospital. He was instrumental in forming one of the first and largest patient databases in this area, and is one of the few physicians in NSW specialising in and accredited in these techniques. More recently he has help established endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) at Concord Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital, and has pioneered the use of endobronchial valves in patients with COPD and emphysema (Endoscopic Lung Volume Reduction – ELVR). Professor Ing also performed the first bronchial thermoplasty procedure in NSW, treating patients with refractory asthma. He is performing ongoing research into ELVR and Bronchial Thermoplasty at Macquarie University Hospital, actively supervising PhD students in these areas. He also utilizes the new technique of cryobiopsy in the diagnosis and management of interstitial lung disease, proximal endobronchial tumours and peripheral lung nodules. He has published his Interventional Pulmonology work in peer-reviewed journals and has supervised six PhD students. A/Professor Jonathan Williamson

A/Prof Jonathan Williamson trained in Sydney, Perth and Heidelberg, Germany. Dr Williamson is a Respiratory and Sleep physician who commenced consulting at Macquarie University Hospital and Clinic in early 2012 as part of the Macquarie Respiratory and Sleep group. Dr Williamson’s practice covers a wide range of respiratory and sleep pathologies including asthma, COPD, lung and airway infections, sleep disorders and lung cancer. He developed an interest in interventional procedures whilst training at Royal North Shore Hospital and further developed this interest at St Vincents Hospital, Darlinghurst in the lung transplant unit, and at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Perth completing a bronchoscopy-based PhD in 2010. Since returning to Sydney, Dr Williamson has been based at Liverpool Hospital where he is establishing an interventional bronchoscopy unit for advanced diagnostic and therapeutic airway procedures. Dr Williamson list of procedures includes endobronchial ultrasound, rigid bronchoscopy for management of central airway obstruction, YAG-laser, cryotherapy, argon plasma coagulation, endobronchial lung volume reduction for management of emphysema and airway stent insertion for palliation of obstructing lung tumours.
