Strong teaching frameworks remain central to the quality and integrity of Pilates practice.

A recent research article, Six Basic Principles and Steps for Teaching Pilates Exercises in Physical Education by Çiğdem Bacak, Emine Busra Yilmaz, Ferman Konukman and Andrew Sortwell, revisits the foundations of Pilates instruction and how they support effective learning environments.

The paper highlights the six well-known Pilates principles: concentration, control, centering, precision, flow and breathing, alongside six practical teaching steps: preparation, demonstration, progressive teaching, individual feedback, review and cool-down.

As the authors note, “the effectiveness of the method lies not only in the exercises themselves, but in the structure and quality of instruction.”

For those committed to maintaining high standards in teaching, this research is a useful reminder that thoughtful progression, clear cueing and attentive supervision remain essential to meaningful and safe practice.

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve been awarded the prestigious Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Dance by the Biennale Danza 2026, the dance division of La Biennale di Venezia, becoming the first Australians to receive the esteemed award since its inception.

The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement will be awarded during the 20th International Festival of Contemporary Dance in Venice from 17 July – 1 August this year. Our company will travel to Venice to receive the award, where we will also present the European premiere of Frances Rings’ seminal work, Terrain.

“This prestigious award recognises all those who have come before me at Bangarra; our dancers, Uncle Rob Bryant, Cheryl Stone and Carole Y.
