Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a chronic disorder of the autonomic nervous system that can significantly affect everyday life—yet diagnosis is often delayed.
A new JAMA review highlights that POTS affects an estimated 0.1–1% of people, with approximately 90% of cases occurring in females. Symptoms commonly begin between the ages of 13 and 29 and may include:
💜 Lightheadedness and palpitations
💚 Fatigue and “brain fog”
💜 Exercise intolerance
💚 Nausea and digestive symptoms
💜 Weakness and disrupted sleep
For 30–40% of people, symptoms begin following an infection such as COVID-19, glandular fever or influenza.
While POTS can have a substantial impact, it can be managed. Treatment commonly begins with individualised lifestyle strategies, with medication considered when appropriate.

A recent ABC News article has highlighted the changing face of risky drinking in Australia, with some women turning to alcohol to cope with symptoms such as poor sleep, anxiety, stress and mood changes during perimenopause and menopause.
While a drink may feel like it helps you unwind, alcohol can actually worsen symptoms including sleep disruption, hot flushes and anxiety.
If you’re concerned about your alcohol consumption or finding it difficult to cut back, Dr Merissa Cappetta at Myma Health is an Addiction Medicine Specialist and offers confidential, non-judgemental support.
