‘They killed us’: Super League chairman touts wild conspiracy theory in car crash interview 22/04/2021

There has been a lot of furore about the establishment of the European Super League lately -

https://www.foxsports.com.au/football/uefa-champions-league/european-super-league-news-2021-real-madrid-florentino-perez-interview-latest-football-news-premier-league/news-story/6b324d8f214c346f2f86b6ae2d0bd056

The view is that the top 15 founder clubs would be getting rich at the expense of others. For now it seems to have fallen apart until they review the model.

This is unlikely to die, if we look at history across sport those with money always look to create new opportunities in sport. For instance World Series Cricket introduced by Kerry Packer in the late 70's early 80's and more recently T20 and even T10. In the 90's in Australia you had the NRL (rugby league) go to war with the Super League. They may have came to their senses a few years later but it is all over money and content. Currently you have Super Rugby falling apart with South Africa exiting the competition by the looks of things to align themselves with Europe. Why, because at the end of the day everyone is looking for a return on investment and to make money.

Where there is money to be made by changing business models or the way things are done, someone will be looking to exploit it. Such is life and the way of the world. Is it right, not necessarily but to stick your head in the sand and believe it isn't going to happen one day, well you are living in denial.

Having worked in the sports broadcasting industry for the better part of over a decade and knowing what happens behind closed doors, don't be surprised if something emerges in another format over the next few years.

What next the T20 of football ??? Surely that is called futsal ? Or perhaps you just have 2 x 20 minute halves with 7 a side. Would create an absolute goal fest but perhaps what spectators are craving.

Time will tell.

NFL player Marquette King mocked by global rugby union fanbase for daring claim 22/06/2020

Be careful when you don't know about something as much as you think you do. Super Rugby's five burning questions — and why Aussies should care 30/01/2020

As the super rugby season kicks off today what are you looking forward to? I am hoping that by the end of the season hashtag can come together and decide what is the best structure for fans moving forward. Have some fan engagement about the competition.

What I would potentially like to see is a champions league style of competition. That would allow teams in each pool to play home and away against the same competition before moving onto the finals. Understandably football teams have their domestic competitions to go back to in between rounds of champions league competitions. Something Australia would need to investigate if it were thinking along those lines is getting the best out of club rugby for a domestic competition. This would allow the competition to grow and attract more teams whilst also changing the format to potentially bring in new interest to the competition.

It's just an opinion, but one that should be seriously considered between the major partners of the competition to ensure long term survival. Bring on the start of the season!

The players have spoken and picked the Australian Super Rugby team of the year. What are your thoughts ? I find it a little surprising the Michael Hooper the Aussie captain missed out to David Pocock, but guess the voting must have been close. Not sure I would have had Rob Simmons in the team either -

The Rugby Union Players' Association
Aussie Players pick the best Super Rugby performers for the very first time
Australia’s professional Rugby players have spoken, choosing two uncapped forwards and representatives from all four states as they picked their Super Rugby Players’ Choice Team of the Year for the first time ever.
Brumbies Number 8 Isi Naisarani and Melbourne Rebels flanker Angus Cottrell have been selected ahead of rivals in the same position with Test match experience, while young guns Folau Fainga’a, Jack Maddocks and Taniela Tupou have also been chosen ahead of more experienced contenders.
Experienced Waratahs quintet Kurtley Beale, Israel Folau, Bernard Foley, Taqele Naiyaravoro and Rob Simmons all played key roles in their team’s run to the Super Rugby Semi Finals, with Naiyaravoro scoring more tries than any other Australian player in 2018, while the hugely experienced Will Genia, David Pocock and Scott Sio all gained selection despite injury-interrupted seasons, their form elevating them to the peak.
Brumbies centre Tevita Kuridrani and lock Rory Arnold round out the team, which scored a combined 523 points in Super Rugby and has an average age of 26.
RUPA President Damien Fitzpatrick congratulated all players on their selection.
“To the fifteen players chosen in the Volvo Players’ Choice Super Rugby Team of the Year, you have been selected by your peers based on your outstanding performances throughout this Super Rugby season. You should be exceptionally proud,” Fitzpatrick said.
“There is no greater accolade than earning the respect and admiration of your teammates and opponents, and on behalf of all of Australia’s players we congratulate you.
“I think it’s a wonderful initiative, undertaken by RUPA and Volvo, to present Australia’s players with the opportunity to select this team. I hope it grows and gathers momentum in the years to come, as it potentially has the opportunity to become one of the most celebrated individual achievements in the game.”

In 2018, the Volvo Players’ Choice Team of the Year replaces the People’s Choice Team of the Year, a competition which has run for the past two seasons, and exclusively empowers Australia’s players to select the best of the best who they play alongside and against every weekend.
The team recognises players who have represented Australian Super Rugby Clubs in 2018, with a shortlist compiled of players per position not excluding anybody based on nationality or international availability.

When people commit to a project if they want to do really well they need to be fully committed. It makes me laugh when I see Frankie Dettori one of the best jockeys in the world show up to the Melbourne Cup the day before. It’s not doing the Cup justice and to be on the favourite and finish where he did. Surely you need more bang for your buck from Frankie. If he ever thinks he is going to win it then I would say he needs a minimum of two weeks here just to get over jet lag. Do it justice and you might get the result you are looking for. Otherwise you are just along for the memories. Hope you backed a winner.

Lately I have had people ask me why they are not getting sponsored, so I thought I would share my views with all. You need to be out promoting your own brand. If you are not promoting yourself how can you expect others to use you in their advertising. It doesn't take much to interact on social media with your fans. Show people who would potentially sponsor you your worth. If they don't think you are valuable then you are not likely to attract the sponsor you are after. If you look at the top 25 list from 2016 - http://www.forbes.com/sites/nickdesantis/2016/06/20/the-top-25-highest-paid-athletes-of-2016-visualized/ it is because these stars are not afraid to be involved in everything. If you feel you cannot manage it yourself ask someone to do it for you. The sooner you start, the more likely it is you will be noticed.
