Having taken up offshore racing in his 70s in 2025, Michael Trask is proof that it's never too late to chase your dreams💭. Although Trask has sailed his whole life, he has mostly been confined to around the cans inshore racing ⛵. But after moving from Sydney to Newcastle in 2020, Trask set the wheels in motion to fulfil his lifelong dream to compete in a Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race🤩. In 2024, he bought the Sydney 38 Challenge, once owned by revered sailor, the late Lou Abrahams.

Trask is looking forward to a year of firsts – he will take the helm for his first Noakes Sydney Gold Coast in July to kick off the 2026 offshore season. In the spirit of the boat’s moniker, Trask is ready to rise to the challenges presented by the 384 nautical mile race💪🏼🙌🏼.

In 2025, Tim Binns and Frances Beaumont blocked out their calendar for the next three years😮. They were set to complete the 80th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in the Double Handed division, knock down and rebuild their recently purchased Newcastle home in 2026, then head off on a cruising adventure on board the Farr 11.6 Titoki in 2027👏🏽👏🏽.

But their well-laid plans were derailed early on when they were forced to retire from the Sydney Hobart💔.

The couple have spent the first six months of 2026 preparing Titoki for offshore sailing, with a fresh approach to this year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart. This has pushed out the knock-down and rebuild to 2027, with the cruising adventure slotted in for 2028.

The first major race on their mission to make it to Hobart is the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race in July📋⛵.

CYCA sailor Andrea Davey has completed her first solo offshore race on board the Mini 6.50 Little Mate in the 219 nautical mile (shortened from 500nm) Mini en Mai, which started and finished in La Trinité-sur-Mer, Brittany, France, last week🎉🕺🏽.

Davey, the only Australian in her division of 57 yachts, completed the course after three days, 18 hours and 38 minutes at sea in mostly light and fickle conditions, crossing the finish line in 33rd place. A solid result for a first solo offshore race👏🏼👏🏼.
